  • After strong start, the Nintendo 3DS stumbles

    Bumper Jack

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata While the 3DS shot out of the gate at launch, the system lost its breath pretty quickly.

Nintendo has acknowledged that sales of its new portable gaming system have slowed down -- and it's not entirely sure why.

The best guess is that Nintendo has put so much emphasis on the system's glasses-free 3D tech that potential buyers aren't aware of the other things it has to offer, such as its StreetPass feature or augmented reality software. And with so many people still sitting on the fence about 3D, they don't see a reason to update their existing DS units.

"It is now clear that the combination of these new features is not necessarily easy-to-understand by just saying one word to those without

  • Sony unveils pair of ‘PlayStation Tablets’

    Bumper Jack

The S1 and S2 - Sony Just months after moving the PlayStation into the cell phone world, Sony is adding tablet computers to its repertoire.

The company has launched its first tablets -- both of which will come equipped with the PlayStation Suite allowing owners to play first generation PlayStation games. Like the Xperia Play (aka the 'PlayStation Phone'), the tablets use the Android operating system. They're expected to hit store shelves this fall.

The S1 and S2 - as they're currently code-named - share some design aspects (both are black and glossy, like a PS3), but are vastly different devices. The S1 is focused on entertainment, featuring a 9.4-inch screen with dual cameras and a curve at the top to

  • Confirmed! Wii successor coming in 2012

    Bumper Jack

Nintendo Wii - Nintendo It's official. Nintendo will have a new home console in stores next year.

The company confirmed the rumors Monday morning, saying it would have a playable version on display at this year's E3 trade show in June. That's also when the company plans to announce details on what will make the unnamed system notably different from its predecessor and competing systems.

The announcement (PDF) was made in a terse three-paragraph statement (beginning with a stiff "To whom it may concern") in conjunction with the company's annual earnings -- and those financial numbers underscore why Nintendo is ready to move on from the Wii. Net profits fell 66 percent from a year ago, the lowest operating profit

  • What does Mario have in store for the 3DS?

    Bumper Jack

Jumping into 3D When Nintendo announced Super Mario was on the way to the 3DS in March, the company didn't offer a lot of details.

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's global president, tossed out a logo (which had a tail), showed a few screen shots and said we'd hear more at E3. It was a frustrating tease for fans.

Now, the man who invented Mario is spilling a few more beans.

Shigeru Miyamoto tells Edge the new game is "a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64. It won't convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I'm talking about."

Miyamoto also confirmed that the game is coming this year -- meaning the 3DS's soft lineup of

    Monster Truck Destroyer

Everyone loves a good story. The problem is, some of the
    best ones are totally false.

That's especially true in the prone-to-exaggeration world of
video games, which is rife with kooky legends and inaccurate information. As it
turns out, however, some of the tallest tales are perfectly legitimate. Read on
as we confirm or bust some of the biggest myths in gaming.

There's a South Park episode hidden in an old Tiger Woods game.

South Park Long before South Park became an
omnipresent television staple, it was all over the Internet. In 1995, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were paid $2,000 to make an animated short for a Fox network executive. The film, dubbed "The Spirit of Christmas,"

  • Smell the fantasy with orc, elf perfume

    Bumper Jack

RPG Line - Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Department stores are littered with perfumes and colognes that can make you smell like everything from a field of wildflowers to Beyoncé. But what's the best scent for the gaming geek?

Calvin Klein's 'Obsession' might be perfect for the die-hard fanboys, but if you're all about role-playing games, a better choice might be the RPG line of perfumes from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab that lets you smell like an orc, elf, dwarf or other fantasy game standard.

Apparently, it's all about layering. Customers first select their race (orc, elf, dwarf, half-elf or halfling), and are then encouraged to pick a class (cleric, fighter, mage, paladin, ranger or rogue) and two alignments (Good? Evil? Chaotic?

The PSP Go is PSP Gone.

After a flurry of rumors Tuesday, Sony has confirmed that the PSP Go's life is coming to an end. The company plans to stop production of the handheld device that relies solely on downloadable content, opting instead to focus on the upcoming NGP - Next Generation Portable.

Sony Computer Entertainment, in a statement to the Japanese website AV Watch, confirmed whispers that it was ceasing production of the PSP Go. • Is EA the next victim of the Madden Curse?

    Bumper Jack

Trouble brewing for Madden It's too early to know whether the infamous Madden Curse will hit this year's cover athlete, but if the wave of recent troubles related to the football franchise is any indication, the hex might be working its mojo on Electronic Arts itself.

Already concerned with how the seemingly unavoidable lockout of the real NFL season will affect sales of the upcoming Madden 12, the company has seen a number of key personnel depart Madden maker EA Tiburon in the past few days, which raises some questions about what fans can expect in 2013.

Ian Cummings, creative director of the Madden series, announced his departure via a recent blog post, ending an 11-year tenure with the company.

    In the post, he

    World’s biggest Pac-Man underway

Most of the time, Pac-Man is limited to a strict diet of 240 dots per level -- but this is the era of supersizing. And the little yellow guy is going on a high-calorie diet.

Namco-Bandai and Microsoft, along with Soap Creative, have released a new, free-to-play version of the arcade classic that links hundreds of user-created mazes together, effectively creating the world's largest game of
    Pac-Man.

The idea's pretty simple. In the original Pac-Man, escaping through one of the side tunnels warped you to the other side of the screen, which often gave you breathing room to escape from Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde. In the new version, using one of those tunnels
    takes you to an entirely

  • Reports: Nintendo to unveil new HD game console

    Monster Truck Destroyer

The Original Wii Prototype The Wii has never been the workhorse console of this generation.

To keep it affordable and attractive to a mass market audience, Nintendo eschewed high definition graphics and, for the most part,
online play when it was introduced. Five years later, though, it's showing its age. And if online reports are to be believed, the company is ready to pull the curtain back on its next console system.

While several outlets have speculated about a new console from Nintendo, Game Informer (which is owned by retail king GameStop) reported Thursday that multiple sources have confirmed Nintendo plans to announce its Wii successor at the E3 game convention in June, if not before.

    The system, which may
