  • Duke Nukem Forever: Twelve Years of Trailers

In development (on and off) for well over a decade, Duke Nukem Forever turned out to be one of the most aptly named video games of all time. Following the news that development of this once-canceled game is up and running yet again, we look back over its evolution through twelve-plus years of gaming innovation.

Twelve years old, and looking every day of it, it's hard to believe this dated trailer once set the gaming world ablaze. It's even harder to believe this game is still in development after more than a decade -- and almost impossible to imagine that any of the content in this trailer is still in the game.

Here's the Duke three years later in 2001, showing off a Las Vegas

  • Playstation Move: The Games

This week sees the launch of Playstation Move, Sony's new motion-control system for the PS3, and while we like the hardware (read our rundown here) it's not going to do you any good without something good to play on it. So we checked out some of the system's launch games. Here's how they stack up.

    The Games

    Sports Champions

Given that Wii Sports is the most successful video game for this generation, it's hardly surprising Sony has chosen its sports title as the pack-in game for Move bundles. And although it might be no Wii Sports, it's an excellent demonstration of the Move system's sensitivity. Six sports are on offer: bocce, table tennis, volleyball, archery, disc golf, and a

  • Sony: Gran Turismo 5 gets green flag November 24

    Chocolate Collector

    Racing to stores Nov 24

In news that'll doubtless have nervous Playstation 3-owning race fans
sighing with relief, Sony today announced its long-awaited, much-delayed
racer Gran Turismo 5 will finally be released on November 24.

It's been a long road. Announced way back in 2005, and originally dated for a
March '10 launch in Japan, Gran Turismo 5 was then delayed to early
November. Last month, Sony announced an indefinite delay to "this
holiday season" -- which led some to wonder if we'd see it before the year's end.

Comparing the game's development effort to the Apollo Space Program, series
creator Kazunori Yamauchi provided some insight into the game's long
    delays.

  • Activision: Black Ops sets new day one sales record

    Chocolate Collector

Black Ops: flying off the shelvesCall of Duty: Black Ops isn't just a hit with critics: it's a huge success with consumers too, according to preliminary sales figures from publisher Activision.

And when they say huge, they mean huuuuuuge. The Cold War-themed shooter
sold 5.6 million copies during its first 24 hours across North America and the UK, generating an estimated $360 million in sales.

If Activision's projections prove accurate, it'll make Black Ops the
biggest entertainment launch of all time, beating the record set by the previous Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 2, this same time last year.

"There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day
records for two consecutive years and we

  • This week in Games: Rock Band 3 can teach you to play guitar

    ROCK BAND 3

    Platforms: X360, PS3, Wii, DS

Rock Band 3 They've simulated nearly every instrument under the sun, covered music from just about every artist and genre we can think of, and given us more kooky single-player "story modes" than you can shake a drumstick at. So where does music gaming go from here? Can Rock Band 3 really be any more than a fancy song pack?

As it happens, yes, it most certainly can.

Combining superb polish with an awesome tracklist, a new keyboard controller and a revolutionary "Pro" mode that'll teach you to play for real, Rock Band 3 isn't just a great music game, but it stands a decent shot at being the best-reviewed game of 2010, period.

And Joystiq -- in one of the game's

  • Five things to know about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

    Chocolate Collector

    The stars line up

Based on the upcoming Harry Potter movie, the seventh in the smash hit series, the Deathly Hallows game is winging its way to a retailer near you soon. Get the lowdown on what's in...and what's out.

    This game's just the start.

As fans will be well aware, J K Rowling crammed too much action into
Deathly Hallows for just one movie -- and this month's game is the same
way. It'll be a two-part deal: the first launches a few days ahead of
the first movie, on November 16, while the second will be along next
July, right around the time the second movie hits theaters, we reckon.

The game's cast is star-studded, but a few key names are missing

  • This week in games: Black Ops proves solid gold

    Call of Duty: Black Ops

Platforms: X360, PS3, PC, Wii, DS

Call of Duty: Black Ops launch trailer

Debuting a year ago this week in what would later be called the biggest entertainment launch in history, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a hard act to follow.

That goes double when you consider that Call of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch had to take the reins from much-loved (and now-gutted) Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward -- and simultaneously face down new
competition from rival EA's revamped Medal of Honor, which launched last
    month.

Nevertheless, Black Ops released this week amid much hype and fanfare, and the
critical verdict on the new game is in. Much to the relief of fans --
and, we're guessing, Activision execs --

  • Six years on, why is World of Warcraft so enduring?

    Buzz's Words

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women Looking back over the fifteen-year history of online role-playing games, one
thing's obvious: World of Warcraft changed everything. Releasing in 2004 to massive acclaim, it doubled the size of the massively-multiplayer market in just a year, forced many of its competitors to release their games for free to compete, and even made television history along the way.

It's hard to believe developer Blizzard's massive MMO has been with us for
more than six years -- and while it was a big hit at its 2004 launch,
its real success has been in the gradual (and continuing) growth of its
subscriber base over the intervening years. Next month, it launches its
third expansion -- Cataclysm -- which will

  • Five things to know about Call of Duty: Black Ops

    Buzz's Words

Call of Duty: Black Ops The biggest name in military games gets its next installment on November 9 -- but how much do you really know about this hotly-anticipated, Cold War-era shooter? In a few minutes, you'll know plenty.

    1. It might be a Call of Duty game, but it doesn't have all that much in common with Modern Warfare 2.

Yup -- different era, different characters, but most importantly, an entirely different developer. Black Ops comes from Santa Monica-based Treyarch, the firm responsible for Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, and (looking further back) well-regarded ports of the early Tony Hawk games. It's probably fair to say they're not held in quite the same regard as Infinity Ward,

  • Kinect broke my TV, says owner

    Buzz's Words

    Silent killer
As you've probably noticed, Microsoft launched its Kinect motion control
system this week -- and while you're rearranging your furniture to make
room for the space-hungry sensor, here's a timely reminder that playing
motion-control games can be hazardous to the health of your television.

It comes to us courtesy of an unfortunate Kinect owner, who...well, we'll let him tell it.

"A public service announcement," he says on his personal blog:
"Do not under any circumstances play Kinect Sports Volleyball at 1:30
a.m. while standing under a ceiling fan with a dangling chain for a
light switch. You could conceivably spike it into your year-old amazing TV, causing it to die with a rainbow LCD
