The critics have lavished it with praise and early fan feedback is just as adoring, but before you get in too deep, consider these helpful starting tips.
1) Download the manual to your iOS device
Given the sheer size and scope of the game, Rockstar Games realized that there was no way to include a complete manual with GTA V. Instead, the company has made it a free download to iOS users. Just head to the iTunes store and grab "Grand Theft Auto V: The Manual." It includes control layouts, an interactive map, a guide to the game’s many activities and more. (Sorry, Android users, you'll have to wait a little while longer.)
While you're at it, be sure to grab the free GTA V app 'iFruit'. It will let you customize cars and license plates for use in-game, plus lets you train Chop, Franklin's pet dog, which will make him a more effective companion.
2) Don't install the play disc
GTA V will require you to install part of the game on your system's hard drive, but Rockstar is advising Xbox 360 owners to not install the "play" disc on your system to bypass the sound of a disc spinning. Doing so can result in a sub-optimal performance, with very laggy graphical glitches. (How laggy? See for yourself!) PS3 players won't have to worry about this, since the game ships on a single disc.
3) Explore early and dig into activities
While the storyline of GTA V is a deep, immersive one, what makes the game truly noteworthy is the rich, vibrant world of Los Santos -- and it's all unlocked when you start the game. The main missions will always be there. Indulge your curiosity before you get too caught up in the story. Play some tennis or golf or grab a jumbo jet and take it for a spin. In addition to getting you better accustomed to the geography, activities can boost your characters’ skills, which will ultimately help make those story missions easier.
4) Play the stock market
There are plenty of ways to make money in GTA V, most of which are totally (and gleefully) illegal. But there are also two stock markets that, when played smartly, can turn your bank account into a real fortune. LCN prices are governed by the story and gameplay progression, while the Bawsaq market is driven by player-data via the Rockstar Games Social Club. Listen out for tips as you play (Weazel News reports often hide handy tidbits) and keep in mind that your gameplay actions can affect the market.
5) Switch characters often
GTA V features three playable main characters – and you should absolutely play as all three. Don’t spend too much time playing as just one of them, as you’ll miss tons of cool missions, vehicles and loot. The map is color-coded to quickly show you which characters can take part in which objectives: Michael is Blue, Trevor is Orange, and Franklin is Green.
