7 things that annoy us about the PlayStation Vita

PS Vita (Sony)There's no denying that the PlayStation Vita is an incredible piece of technology. Loaded for bear with a slick OLED screen, dual analog sticks and pretty much every bell and whistle you can imagine, it's a gadget lover's dream (and the launch game lineup is nothing to scoff at, either).

But that doesn't mean there aren't a few things that drive us crazy.

We appreciate that it's a technical marvel, and we understand the realities of both marketing and flexibility. Still, Sony, couldn't you have rethought a few of these things before shipping?

- That looping background music

The minute you turn on your Vita, you're welcomed with a soothing music that puts you in a happy mood. It's a nice introduction to the system.

But it never turns off! After a short while, that music that put a smile on your face gives you a facial tik as you frantically search for a way to get rid of it. It's possible — and not that difficult to do so through the system's setting (just go to the sounds and displays option) - but was it really necessary to put it on an endless loop originally?

- Cutting out of cut-scenes

You may be the type to skip through unplayable cut-scenes in games. But if you're not, you could be in for a surprise the first time you play Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

The Vita kicks into screensaver mode after a mere one minute of inactivity under its default settings. So if you're simply holding the device, watching a game set up its storyline before you dive into the action, the system will occasionally seem to turn itself off.

Again, you can change the time frame for these sorts of actions, but really, who thought it was a good idea to have one minute as the default setting?

- Time to recharge

Don't expect any marathon gameplay sessions on the Vita. It's not that the games aren't worthy of them. It's the fact that the system's battery just can't hold a charge for an extended period of time.

The Vita only lasts three hours or so per charge when you're playing games (though Sony says it will sometimes last as long as five). In other words, if you were planning to bring one along for a cross-country flight, you might want to have another entertainment option at your disposal as well. Even worse? Fully charging a drained Vita battery will take 2 hours and 40 minutes.

- Console...quality…updates

The Vita's advanced graphics chip and blissfully indulgent OLED screen team up to create a gaming experience that's almost on par visually with the PS3. In fact, by subtly encouraging the comparisons, Sony has helped build interest in the device.

Unfortunately, like its home console cousin, the Vita is plagued by repeated system updates. Since we got our Vita to begin testing, we've had to update it three times. Regular, mandatory system updates (which are never short affairs) have been a pain in the neck for PS3 owners for years. Will Vita owners be subjected to the same annoyance?

- The pricing problem

Sony knew the Vita would face plenty of competition from Apple — specifically when it came to software pricing. While no one expected Vita retail games to match the ridiculously low pricing of the App Store, we did expect downloadable games to be more competitive.

So far, that's not proving true. Take the omnipresent Plants vs. Zombies. On the iPhone, it's $3. iPad owners will pay $7. Want it for the Vita? That's gonna run you $15.

- Ow! My thumbnail!

Gamers are pretty universal in their praise for the look and feel of the Vita. It's quite sleek and Sony seems to have thought out every detail…

…except the slot where you insert games. The cover does a good job of keeping dust out. Unfortunately, it's nearly effective at keeping users out, too. If you don't have sturdy fingernails, prying the thing open can be a frustrating, challenging experience. Our friends at Wired note they had to resort to using a small knife.

- Too touchy

The Vita's rear-touch pad seems like a killer feature -- and perhaps one day, it will be. But for many of the launch titles, rear-touch is an oversized, overly sensitive nuisance.

Accidentally let your finger slide over the pad (which, incidentally, is where your fingers naturally want to rest) and you run the risk of taking an errant shot on goal in FIFA. While many games let you disable rear-touch, a hardware solution would have been a nice alternative. Perhaps some way to cover it up?

Two of the complaints were about default settings? That's equivalent to complaining about the default wallpapers on an iPhone or the default sleep time on a computer...Seems like you're really looking for things to complain about.

Sales on the Vita are not stellar, the price will go down and so will the cost of the games. It's just too expensive right now.

If the Vita was priced around 125... I might be interested. Sony sure likes to stick it to the consumer, pricing a handheld the same as their flagship Playstation 3 that is a console, plays BluRays, and is just as capable for online use. I can't wait to see what the margins are going to be, I bet Sony takes a huge loss right out of the gate. I see Nintendo snickering in the near future.

Just to add, I guess Sony didn't learn anything from Nintendo's price misstep.

You know what. the game boy is an amazing system as is the Vita and psp. My only complaint with the gameboy was they made it so the newer ones wont take the older cartridge gameboy games. Otherwise they all are awesome. They all have great games (real games not pretend ones phones and ipads do). They let you play musi, music videos, movies and stuff. They have camera options tho personally id rather have a fancy camera, and they are great. Hell with the psp anyways I could exchange the same memory stic from my psp to my video camera, record stuff, put it in my #$%$ camera take a lot of pics, and throw it back in my psp and play games and watch the ovies i just recordd or see the pics i just took.

my son wants one for Christmas 2012. maybe they'll change a couple of things about it (like the overly sensitive rear touchpad) i can see how that might be a touch aggravating. or the game slot being hard to open. those seem like things that sony could easily fix and probably should. he'll still want it regardless. would be nice if the game prices would drop a bit.

    Another waste of money.

It costs too much. The system itself is 250$(WiFi only) then you have to have a memory card to save games, the cheapest one being the 4gb priced at 20$, plus then you will want games on top of that especially with no backwards compatibility to the psp. I definitely see the Vita having a price drop.

The only game that has caught my interest in buying a PSP is called Queen's gate. Unfortunatly, the game is still in Japanese.

Interesting. The first yahoo article on the Vita was full of glowing praise for the Vita. This one, not so much. Funny how time (or experience) can change perception.

The thing that annoys me about the PS Vita IS THE PS VITA!

I think this Author is just an idiot...."but was it really necessary to put it on an endless loop originally?" Yes it was necessary because no console or anything has ever featured a background song loop and to put it on the default draws attention to it and if your not an idiot you can figure out that you go it to sound settings and fix it. Second: "who thought it was a good idea to have one minute as the default setting?" you just must be slow to not know how to change a screen saver setting if we were back in 92' maybe i would cut you some slack but computers, game systems, and smart phones have been in our daily lives long enough to know how to deal with a screen saver... and third: - "Console...quality…updates" yea really your live is sooooo fast paced and your ADD is so bad that you can't handle a 5 to 7 min update...get real

several of the complaints seem legit and some just seem outright petty...did microsoft pay for this?
    • Clinton 2 months ago
MS doesn't even sell a portable game console...
    • Joe Pontbriand 2 months ago
Which they should, if they want to stay on top. Especially considering MS thinks everyone is made of money to throw at video games.
    • Logan 2 months ago
As Clinton said, MS does not do portable gaming so why bash the Vita. It is not like they have a portable system they are trying to advertise. If anything the Vita is competing with Tablets and smartphones, ipods, etc.

Just download Plants Vs. Zombies for free if you're a Plus member on PSN.

I'd rather listen to Jon Bon Jovi tapes on my Sony Walkman than play this dumb game system.

The majority of negatives/ complaints discussed in this article are so minor that they are not even worth mentioning, but this is yahoo for you. Anyways, the only legit downside to the Vita is the battery life. Yahoo should keep that section and delete the rest of the article. Seriously, nitpicking over default settings that can easily be changed?? Fail
    • Clinton 2 months ago
You'd be surprised how many software users never touch Settings - that's why it really is important to choose the right defaults. First impressions matter!

Quit being lazy and set up your Vita like everyone should before you play you biased article writer/critic, and the grip pads are so that you can position your hands like you were grasping a DS3 controller... you make a fist shape with your middle, ring, and little fingers and balance it there while you use the index fingers to use the shoulder buttons (L&R)... and the thumbs... please don't make tell you where to position them. The only valid setback I find with the handheld is that the media manager limits the speed of your media transfers; for those who do no know, the PSP could let you drag and drop files into your PSP's memorystick, but that ability is gone for the Vita, so you must select individual files in the Vita's media manager rather than drag in whole folders. If you use the "select all" function, the Vita transfers files all together in the folder you chose, but it does not separate the files in you own customized folders; in addition, the file transfer for a large amount of files is rather slow.

He's talking about the Dual Shock 3 controller genius.
