Angry Birds Star Wars (Credit: Rovio)What lies beyond Angry Birds Space? A galaxy far, far away, naturally.
On Monday, Rovio announced Angry Birds Star Wars, the next installment in their popular bird-flinging franchise. The odd co-branded combo will force push its way to iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone and Windows 8 on November 8.
Rovio has yet to reveal what exactly you'll do in Angry Birds Star Wars, but a few facts have surfaced. The Red Bird will take on the role of Luke Skywalker as an X-Wing pilot, while Darth Vader and his Stormtrooper pals will get a porcine makeover, USA Today reports. It will use the same gravitational physics as Angry Birds Space, but expect to see familiar Star Wars locations like Hoth and Tatooine as levels.
In a press release, company CMO Peter Vesterbacka calls it "the best Angry Birds game we've ever done" and claims it combines "the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay." Hopefully that includes letting us lob stuff at Jar Jar.
It's a decidedly bizarre match, but Rovio knows what it takes to make a hit. Their last release, the spin-off Bad Piggies, flew to the top of the App Store a mere three hours after going live, the fastest for any Rovio game. The Angry Birds franchise has been downloaded over 1 billion times since its debut in December of 2009.
While Angry Birds Star Wars won't be available until November, Rovio's kicking off a big merchandising blitz in late October with an army of toys, plush dolls, clothes and Halloween costumes.
