    • The Week in Webgames: Space strategy gets social

      Edgeworld

Got a few minutes to kill?  Why not unwind with a free webgame?  For your gaming convenience, we've assembled the week's new releases on Yahoo! Games in this handy roundup.

      Edgeworld

Social games like Farmville and Mafia Wars are all well and good, but sometimes you want a slick sci-fi scenario to sink your teeth into.  That's where Edgeworld comes in.  As the commander of a colony on the politically-fragmented planet of Cerulea IV, you must build up your defenses, negotiate alliances with other players, and assemble awe-inspiring armies of marines and war-machines.  The visual style recalls Starcraft, but the gameplay is a bit friendlier, easing you into the game mechanics with numerous starter quests.

    • Jedi wannabes will finally have a chance to join the Rebellion this spring.

Kinect Star Wars (LucasArts)After a series of delays, Kinect Star Wars will hit store shelves on April 3...and Microsoft is rolling out all the stops to promote it.

In addition to the game -- which lets players live out their Luke Skywalker fantasies through the Kinect motion capture peripheral -- Microsoft will begin selling a Kinect Star Wars Xbox 360 bundle for $449. The package will include an R2-D2 themed Xbox, a C-3PO gold controller, and an unlockable C-3PO for the game's, ahem, dance mode.

    • ‘Skylanders Giants’ announced

Skylanders Giants (Activision)Bad news for parents who are having trouble tracking down those suddenly elusive Skylanders toys: the problem is about to get a lot bigger.

Activision unveiled Skylanders Giants at the International Toy Fair in New York on Tuesday, bringing more figurines and a new video game adventure to fans of the franchise.

And those fans are legion. According to the NPD group, last year's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure -- with its associated action figures -- was the top new children's property of 2011. More telling? A glance at empty retail shelves, which have been picked clean of the collectible little devils since their arrival last holiday season.

    • Madden NFL 12 (EA Sports)Next time you're about to bet on a football game, run a simulation on the latest version of EA's Madden franchise first. You might make a bundle.

The reigning football video game champ accurately called the winner of Super Bowl XLVI two days before the game -- and was pretty close on the point spread, to boot.

Madden had predicted the Giants would edge the Patriots, 27-24. In reality, the Giants won by a score of 21-17.

    • uDraw (THQ)Not every game is going to be a hit, but some misses are uglier than others. Much, much uglier.

During an investor call Thursday, troubled game publisher THQ drew a pretty grim picture of their uDraw game accessory.  Launched just before the 2011 holiday season, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the device -- which lets users draw pictures and interact with games via a tablet-sized drawing pad -- failed to sell as well as the Wii version, which was released to decent sales in 2010.

And by 'failed to sell', we mean the thing totally tanked.  The company shipped about 1 million uDraws to retailers, but once they hit store shelves, they didn't budge. That leaves the company with a stunning 1.4 million units of uDraws taking up space in warehouses.

    • Gamers at internet cafe in China (Getty Images)It's easy to get absorbed in a game, but it's another thing entirely to be so absorbed that you don't notice the guy next to you has died.

Gamers in a Taipei internet café failed to notice the newly deceased for a staggering amount of time earlier this week. Officials estimate that 23-year-old gamer Chen Rong-yu had been dead up to nine hours before anyone realized it.

Rong-yu entered the café to play popular online game League of Legends on Tuesday evening, and was there for quite a while. Witnesses saw him on his cell phone around noon on Wednesday (still playing), but on Wednesday evening a waitress found his corpse, sitting rigidly in the chair with his hands still stretching toward the computer.

    • THQ is taking some drastic measures after a string of sales disappointments.

Saints Row The Third (THQ)The game publisher, once the industry's third largest, has laid off 240 employees and cut its CEO's salary in half for a year, according to an SEC filing. This follows a recent announcement that the company's stock might be removed from the NASDAQ stock exchange.

It seems THQ's restructuring efforts have been going on for a while now. The company has cut over 700 jobs since 2008 and vowed several times to back away from the children's licensed game market.

    • 100 year-old stays sharp with Nintendo DS

Nintendo might be thought of as a kid-friendly company, but they've proven over the years to be pretty good with the older crowd, too.

      Much, much older.

Take the amazing case of gamer Kathleen "Kit" Connell, who credits her time spent with the Nintendo DS as the key to her mental acuity despite being 100 years old.

    • Poll Vault: Xbox 360 is your most played system

With the Playstation Vita and Wii U both launching this year, the battle over your video game system allegiances is about to heat up.

But before you have to make tough buying decisions, we gave you an easy one. In our last reader poll, we asked: "Which system do you play the most?" And in harmony with recent sales figures, the Xbox 360 was the big winner.

Microsoft's once-troubled machine (remember those Red Rings?) raked in 25,420 votes, good for 38% of the total.  Nipping at its heels was Sony's PS3, finishing with a very healthy -- and very close -- 23,147 (35%).
