The initial criticisms surrounding Nintendo's 3DS handheld were pretty straightforward: The price was too high and there was a paucity of good games.
Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo)Nintendo took care of the pricing problem in August. Now, it's taking on the quality concerns.
Super Mario 3D Land, which hit shelves earlier this week, combines elements from the classic 2D side-scrolling Mario games as well as more recent free-roaming 3D Mario titles, plus it brings back the much-loved Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3. And critics are cheering.
More than 20 outlets have given the game a score of 90 or above, with four of those giving it a perfect 100.Read More »from Can Super Mario turn around the 3DS?

Tanooki Mario (Nintendo)The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals might be barking up the wrong mushroom.
On Monday, the controversial organization issued a press release attacking iconic Nintendo mascot Mario for wearing a 'Tanooki' suit in his latest adventure, the Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land, which hit shelves on Sunday.
"Tanooki may be just a "suit" in Mario games, but by wearing the skin of an animal, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur," PETA says.Read More »from PETA slams Mario over use of a fur suit

Q*bertTwenty-eight years ago, Rob Gerhardt set a high score of 33 million in a single game of Q*bert. And while countless gamers have set their sights on topping that in the following decades, they've all fallen short.
The latest attempt came this weekend, when one gamer spent 59 hours playing the platform jumper, but still fell far short, racking up a total of just 28 million.
That's the third time this year someone has tried to claim the Q*bert crown, but so far no one has come close. Perhaps Rick Carter, who led the most recent charge, might have fared better if he hadn't launched into the attempt after driving for 16 hours to the tournament.Read More »from Unbeatable? NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories rose 1 percent to $1.08 billion in October, helped by sales of "Battlefield 3," market researcher NPD Group said Friday.
Battlefield 3 (EA)Hardware sales, which include game consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii, rose 6 percent from October 2010 to $295.6 million.
Sales of software, or the video games themselves, rose 3 percent to $621.3 million.Read More »from NPD: October video game sales rise 1 percent
That's well short of the 21 percent year-over-year increase that Cowen and Co. analyst Doug Creutz was expecting. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, meanwhile, was forecasting a 14 percent software sales growth.
It spawned a multi-billion-dollar franchise, turned the Xbox into a household name and managed to make the awkwardly-named Master Chief a legit pop-culture icon.

It's a three-peat.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)Modern Warfare 3, the latest installment in Activision's juggernaut shooter franchise, has set a new entertainment industry record for the biggest product launch of all time, selling 6.5 million copies in the U.S. and U.K. in its first 24 hours and earning $400 million in the process.
That tops the $360 million Call of Duty: Black Ops made last year in its first 24 hours and the $310 million Modern Warfare 2 took in during its first day in 2009.Read More »from ‘Modern Warfare 3′ sets day-one entertainment record
Most games have the good sense to treat the release of a new Call of Duty game like a nuclear blast: get as far as way as possible, stockpile canned food, and only come up when you know for a fact that the air is clear.
But most games aren't The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.Read More »from Massive ‘Skyrim’ soars to top of review charts
