EverQuest going free-to-play

EverQuest (Sony Online Entertainment)The game that made MMO games a viable force in the industry is going free-to-play.

EverQuest will drop its mandatory monthly pricing strategy in March, as the game hits its impressive 13th birthday — though like other free-to-play games Sony Online Entertainment currently distributes, there will be a tiered pricing plan for players who want more features and content.

"The game will now be setup to be flexible so that you can decide how much to pay, based on how much fun you're having," said EverQuest producer Thom Terrazas in a statement.

Once dubbed 'EverCrack' due to its highly addictive nature, the game boasted 750,000 paying subscribers at its peak. It was, at the time, mind boggling, though it seems miniscule compared to the 11.5 million active players that World of Warcraft boasts today.

Free players will have access to four character classes and races in the game (they'll have to pay if they want one of the others), but won't be limited content-wise. The original game and all 17 expansions are accessible. Silver level subscribers -- those who pay $5 per month -- will have a little more freedom in terms of coin limitations per character and wider chat ability. Players who spend $15 per month won't have any limitations.

SOE has spent a lot of time lately exploring the free-to-play business model, converting a pair of games that have initially operated on monthly subscription fees. And the early signs have been encouraging.

DC Universe Online, for example, went from being a mid-tier performer in the subscription-only model to red hot, adding 1 million players in a single week after making the switch. The transition was so successful that John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, was forced to take to Twitter to apologize for lag and login issues, noting "Very bluntly, this has been a wee bit more successful than we planned on."

EverQuest II, the follow-up to the original game, made the jump in December.

SOE is no stranger to the free-to-play model, of course. Free Realms pulled in 20 million registered users in its first two years — an astonishing number no matter how you look at it, though the company hasn't disclosed how much of that group is actual active monthly players.

Ah, my first MMORPG! I remember I used human but slow healing so I gone with Troll w/magician type of class. Healing is definitely faster but I didn't really had any clue on how to play. I tried to run across the swamp to see how far I can run but I kept dying by monsters. Later I realized, ah, I had to kill those monsters (snakes, squirrels) that are in green color to be safe. White is equal lvl, avoid yellow and red as they are higher level.

Me: "What is your expedition ratio?" Them "What is that?" Me: "Just do /expedition to get the ratio!" Them /ex "YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED!" 5 minutes later Them "SOAB WHERE IS MY FUNGI TUNIC!!!!!!!!!! GUARDINGTANK IM REPORTING YOU!!!! YOUR GOING TO GET BANNED" GM "I heard you were telling people to do /ex so you can loot there items with that exploit!" Me: "I dont know what your talking about?" Snickers hahaha GM " Ok well if your doing it don't do it no more because if we catch you we might have to tell you to stop again!" Me: "OK thank you sir have a nice day!" lol

Sorry but that's not going to bring your player base back nor add new players. Why play it when you can play Everquest II. And if you're wondering what the game is...don't even try it. It's highly addictive so just "say No"

EQII is steaming pile of #$%$

Very nice for you, but you're point is only opinion. I don't play EQ or EQII so your insult falls on "fail".

What's a bind? What's SOW? Ooooh look, there's somebody all dressed in BRONZE and they have a LAST NAME. Help! Help! My corpse is stuck in the bottom of Blackburrow and I can't fine it! Whee! ~ Lugonn Gadabout/Ignis Fatuous - Nameless/Tribunal - '99-'06 - RIP

Eq was pretty fun, kinda of a long grind, but fun none the less. We and my brother met some very cool people and ended up playing EQ, EQ2, Lineage 2, Guild Wars, and vanilla wow with them. Good times, good fights.

I didnt realize EQ had 17 expacs.

Because of World of Warcraft I thought Everquest died out. It was a fun game when it came out. That is cool people can play for free now.

Sirkivan was fun! but EQ was really fun in thelate 90's
  • C-spot  •  Neenah, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
It was great, ten years ago. I abandoned it when everyone had to queue up to finish missions. That and the ridiculous death penalty to XP. Sorry, WOW was bigger and better.
    • RyanM 3 months ago
C-spot: Really, a death penalty to XP? How sad it is to have no consequences for your actions. Where is the risk vs reward. Everquest was groundbreaking, and set the foundation for all modern mmorpgs. In regards to "wow" being bigger and better, seriously? Obviously you are someone who cried when mommy had to put peroxide on your little boo-boo. Sad...

Everquest 2 may have lost a lot of players to WoW, but I still play it, even above Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3.

lets all stay inside and play fantasy games, let the real world pass us bye, live in my parents basement forever, FUN!!!

I play it now. The graphics are not as great as WOW, but free is better in my book. WOW makes my computer run hot and shut off. I have no idea why. I'm 35 though and my kid will only play wow. Go figure. They really need to upgrade the graphics and lag in EQ.
