Facebook gaming: What’s hot, What’s not

'Like it' or not, gaming on Facebook is big, big business. And it's only getting bigger.

Last year, social game companies raised a stunning $1.5 billion in funding. With that kind of money backing them up, most industry types expect 2012 to be an even more lucrative year for Facebook gaming. But will it be a better year for gamers?

That depends of what kinds of experiences you happen to enjoy on the social network. Here's a handful of game types expected to be all the rage -- and a few fit to be unfriended.

HOT

Hidden-object hunts

Hidden Chronicles (Zynga)Forget the farm and leave the words with your friends -- the most popular Facebook game of 2011 was Gardens of Time, a hidden-object hunt by Playdom, and it could well be the game that broke the dam holding back this immensely popular casual game genre.

It's so big, in fact, that leading Facebook developer Zynga's very first game of 2012 was also their first hidden-object game, Hidden Chronicles.  But while the genre is just getting started on Facebook, it's been a huge casual game genre for years now. New hidden-object hunts arrive on sites like Yahoo! Games each week. With an immense backlog, companies need only port these adventures over to Facebook and watch the engagement skyrocket.

Experts like AJ Glasser, editor of Inside Network, are a bit tentative, though, especially when it comes to their earning potential.

"I don't know if it's really going to grow that big. The big game makers might feel obliged because Playdom had such luck with it, but we're not really sure if the monetization figures are that great."

Regardless of the financials, however, game makers are likely to dive in just to keep up with the Joneses.

"We will see more entries from bigger players because they feel that they have to have a hidden-object game in their wheelhouse," Glasser adds.

Console game companions

Dragon Age Legends (EA)While huge video game franchises like Assassin's Creed and Dragon Age will always be at home on your HD TV, expect to play smaller versions even more frequently on Facebook in 2012.

Companion games were a big deal last year. EA saw serious success with Dragon Age Legends, which tied in directly to their console RPG Dragon Age II, and shot a salvo across Zynga's bow with the immensely popular The Sims Social, which is now integrated into The Sims 3. Glasser suspects we'll also see a game related to EA's anticipated RPG Mass Effect 3 prior to that game's March release.

Other players include Ubisoft, who is betting big on Facebook with games related to Assassin's Creed, CSI and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, and THQ, who took the social network to the mat last year with games based on the UFC and WWE franchises.

Competition over cooperation

Tetris Battle (The Tetris Company)Most gamers think of social games as co-operative affairs. We help build farms, tend gardens and feed fish. It's all quite friendly -- and to many, it's all a bit dull, too.

That's bound to change in 2012, as more competitive social games come to the fore. Though lots of games already feature competitive elements, don't be surprised to see your social gaming life get a lot more cutthroat as the year goes on.

"You've got all these games coming out now where it's about combat between real players with real consequences — where there's a winner and a loser," says Glasser.  "We're seeing developers want to recreate that massively-multiplayer real-time combat experience."

Even standard puzzle games, long a staple of any Facebook gamer's diet, are getting more competitive with more of a focus on leaderboards. The theory? Competition breeds engagement; players will go all out trying to take down their friends, which could mean big bucks for the providers. Glasser points to the sudden success of Tetris Battle, which lets players stack the famous blocks against one another, as an example.

"Puzzle games want to encourage that competitive nature…people pay for that," she notes.

NOT

Taking care of virtual pets

Pet Society (Playfish)As recently as 2010, pet-raising simulations like PetVille and Pet Society were snuggled comfortably in Facebook's monthly top 10 lists. But unlike your love affair with your real Fido, the genre's popularity is on the wane.

"It used to be so popular to have a pet to take care of," Glasser points out. "I'm wondering if that genre is shrinking or if it's in need of a revamp. Pet Society launched on iOS and flopped. I just don't see Pet sims going anywhere."

For those of us weary of getting a million requests to help Aunt Shirley buy Mr. Whiskers a new litterbox, that might be good news.

Managing cities

Civilization World (Firaxis)Can there really be too much of a good thing? If that particular thing happens to be the crowded city-building genre, then yes, there certainly can be.

Led by the ever-popular CityVille, a wealth of city-building sims flooded the social games market last year, including big-name franchises like Civilization World. But Glasser doesn't think that trend will hold up in 2012.

"The city building genre is oversaturated right now," she notes, adding that it's slowed down significantly. And when something is oversaturated, gamers tend to flock elsewhere. The glory days of the empire simulation may well be behind us.

Game Show games

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox)It seems like a no-brainer: marry Facebook's  know-it-all audience with popular game shows, and you've got a trivia-game champ, right?

Not necessarily. Games based on game shows haven't enjoyed anywhere near the success of other Facebook genres, despite some very big names ("Deal or No Deal," "$100,000 Pyramid") taking a crack at it. While games based on "Jeopardy!" and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" have fared much better, it's looking like this genre is destined to walk away with a consolation prize.

What kinds of games are you itching to play on Facebook -- and what are you hoping goes the way of the dodo? Let us know in the comments.

When I first joined FB, I started playing Mafia Wars and Cafe World. At first it was fun, building my own restaurant and empire, but after awhile, Cafe started changing by adding quests and that was when I had to start asking "neighbors" for help, and most of them did not help if I did not ask directly, the help was posted on the wall for them to click on, so none of the quests were finished. Same thing with MW, plus there were "bullies" on it; players that would kill you as soon as you leveled up, and once you healed yourself, again, they would kill you again and again.
Now, the only game I like is Empire/Allies, yes you do have to ask for help from neighbors, but just doing the battles is fun.
But, I agree with everyone else, these games would be more fun if we didn't have to beg our friends for help and spend our own money to get ahead.
I would like to see some real video games, like Mario Bros, Pacman, Defender, Galaga type games were we don't need our friends help.

I would love to see a version of a Carmen Sandiego game back on Facebook. I first played that game on the computer in my sixth grade classroom and ever since then, I just cant forget how much fun it was to exercise my brain. Keeping track of all those clues and learning about different places and details about different things. It was so freakin' awesome!

I hope Mark Z (FB CEO) is reading all these comments.... I complain with every survey I take for Zynga to quit with the begging for friends crap, and you can't ask your neighbors more than once in a game to send you "gifts", and the games ALL have too much stuff they want you to buy with REAL $$, which I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO DO. Have hardly even gotten near finishing a "quest" before they've ended it, because of so many stupid levels/request/buy for cash options , all of which slow down or cease the "quest" altogether...VERY FRUSTRATING. I will quit game-playing on Zynga altogether if this keeps on much longer. To me, it was a break from filling out job apps on line, while unemployed, not a lifestyle - which is what they seem to think it is for everyone. Who, in their right minds actually SPENDS REAL hard-earned $$ on a virtual game world. Mark Z and ZYNGA are filthy rich enough without MY $$. Between Timeline on FB and relentless Zynga game begs, I am seriously considering heading over to Google+.

All Zynga games should be re-named FREEZE FRAME. After your landspace gets too large you can go cook dinner and return, hoping by then it will have loaded. Nevermind visiting friends...especially on slow connections/computers. It has now been weeks since I was 'on the farm', and going to the City is becoming as much a pain. Hidden Object games are indeed fun, and I enjoy Cronicles...yet I have lost energy when scenes froze before even opening, forcing me to reload the page. Zynga ACTS like a company which has not a care in the world for their consumers. It may seem alright to them Now. Yet they should check their History.

I like Farkle a lot but it tends to make me angry after I've lost 25 games in a row.

You can only go so far on these types of games until you have to start paying for things like energery and other special items. Mafia Wars it was always untracable cell phones. you could not do a mission unless you spent $10 to buy 5 phones. then five minutes later you had to spend more money to get to the next level.
I quit playing games two years ago. I got sick ofhaving to friend complete strangers in order to build up my teams. I was worried about my privacy. Now I can read stories on my news feed that actually matter. I think FaceBook would be better off if Zynga had a seperate website or a seperate news feed of their own. a "Games only" feed.

i agree i stopped it too cause of it. same as farmville you either have to have real money or add alot of strangers just to do stuff
    • Jeanne 3 months ago
I agree but that IS the point of their game, to take real money from your wallet to theirs, its all about the money not your actual enjoyment lol

I aggree 100% Pixie, they make enough out of ads etc. without needing to resort to ripping people off by forcing them to buy stuff. I have chatted with lots of folk that use games as their only means of entertainment (mainly older people) and it's sad that they have to spend part of what little they do have so they can enjoy playing online. The claim by Facebook that they are building a giant network of "friends" is #$%$ all they are doing is building their membership so they can charge advertisers more and find more poor unfortunate players to rip off.

I quit playing all Zynga games. Far too many quests forcing one to spam all your friends and/or friend strangers just for the game. But worse, they do not seem to fix the problems. And I recently read in a financial article about the underperformance of their stock that they actually said that they don't worry about losing players over these problems because they make up for it with new games. Glad they aren't worried about losing me, sorry to say I won't play any of their new games. I block the endless requests by blocking their games. Playdom at least tries to fix the problems in their games and there isn't nearly so much begging required. My all time favorite game on Facebook is Zombie Pets. I do not have to beg people for stuff. I can advance on my own. Yes, there are things that cost real money to get... and BECAUSE they don't force me to do that to enjoy the game, I don't mind spending my coffee money on Zombie Pets. And the developers of this game are extremely responsive and always resolve problems. NO other game I've played has been so exceptional. So rather than see a movie, I'll spend it on ZOMBIE PETS!

Zombie pets? Maybe I'll block Farmvile and try that game.

pet society is still good. weekly updates of new items and stuff. no begging and almost everything is buyable with normal coins

Deb makes an excellent point about Zynga. Do nothing tech support that do not even read your complaint. Poker hasn't worked for me on Chrome or Mozilla for weeks now, and my brother had a permanent purchase block put on him for no reason at all. Their security system is terrible and worthless for travellers who have to 'confirm' their location every time logging in from a new IP address

which facebook games do i play? none.. that got old real fast.
  • nofanofthis  •  Mansfield, Ohio  •  3 months ago
Like most of the other comments state if they didnt make us beg our friends for items we would play their games more. Plus my biggest complaint is that they freeze up so much. My husband and I play farmville and there are days that it takes an hour or more just to take care of it because it freezes up or runs that slow. Who has that kind of time to waste day after day just to take care of a fake farm.

If they were counting on me to make money they would go broke. I played Farmville only because I was begged by a friend to give it a try. I am always one click away from blocking the game forever. If it wasn't that others wanted help I would not play at all. I certainly am never going to give them a penny to achieve anything or get a sparkling horse. If it isn't the coins then I don't get it (33,000,000+). I think my goal is to get as many coins as possible now. Of course at this point there really isn't a point, they throw 20 new things at you and your expected to build them all but with so few people playing anymore I just delete them. Then they decided to have three other farms...guess they think you'll sit in front of the computer so you can tend to things all day. Guess I'm not a gamer...I don't even have a console (XBox, PS3, Wii) I'm to busy doing real things than to grow roots into my desk chair! That was a pretty good rant wasn't it!!

I already blocked cityville, farmville, fronterville & quit all Zynga games when the tool away the collectable card game
  • Wild Irish Rose  •  3 months ago
It is not just Zynga but almost ALL of the games on Facebook make you "beg" your friends for crap to advance in the game or even have to add more friends which usually means strangers that play the game just to advance any farther. The other problem is have to spend your actual money to get necessary items to complete your missions or objectives in order to advance. I can understand maybe that the developers need to charge somewhere for something in order to keep up with the costs of the upkeep for the game but come one! I know there are people out there & plenty of them, that would pay just for cool bonus items that ya raise your stats or whatever but are not necessary to keep advancing in the game. I used to love my farmville, petville, etc. but I rarely get on any of them anymore because I refuse to beg my friends to send me stuff when they don't play. I absolutely cringe at the idea of adding people just for a freaking game. I have gotten to where I play mostly games like Bejeweled Blitz because you do not have to send out anything to anyone in order to keep going in the game & it is an old favorite with a little twist.
I would go back to playing my farmville in a heart beat if they changed it to where you could advance on your own if you had to. Ok you can advance faster with friends help but don't make it where you have to use your friends or pay real money to advance. That is all I am asking really!

My mom used to decry the Atari system we had, saying video games will "rot your mind." She is now addicted to a ton of facebook crap.
    • max 3 months ago
looks like it rotted her mind, She's wise to foresee what would happen.
    • Joey JoJo Shabadoo 3 months ago
No info on her state of mind, Max. But I understand how you would want to insult someones mother seeing how yours didn't want you and gave you up for adoption.
    • Borges 3 months ago
Dont think he was insulting your mom. Actually seems like hes trying to be ironic. At least thats what I got from his comment.

So much for your brain not being rotted... So you are not confused Joey Im insulting you not your mother.

previous farmville junkie but now you have to build everything or use real money to get the good stuff.....farming is too much #$%$ now..WAY TO GO ZYNGA
  • Carla  •  Port St Lucie, Florida  •  3 months ago
I still play a couple of the Zynga games, but I tired of begging all the time. Mafia Wars used to be fun before all the things you have to collect parts to build started. It is becoming more like a job than something I do for fun. There is too much pressure to complete buildings and missions. People who do not have 500 friends who actively play can never finish most of the building projects. And you can only help 5 people a day. What is up with that? I refuse to spend money.
  • tammy  •  Kingman, Arizona  •  3 months ago
I don't like games that make you have to spam your friends. I just play the slot machine games. lol
  • Barney  •  Charlotte, North Carolina  •  3 months ago
Once you get to the higher levels, it takes for ever to level up. Too many quests to do at the same time. Once you finish one a new one pops up. never ends. some of the stuff you need real money and I dont spend real money, so I'm pretty much in limbo. Have to ask for too much stuff and the pop ups are rediculus. games take several minutes to load.
  • Don G  •  San Diego, California  •  3 months ago
Farmtown was all a game should have ever been. You talk with friends or people you've never met half around the world or just tinker around the screen downloading all your days stress. Then everything went haywire and you have to start buying stuff and you can't talk to people except through messages or not at all. There are quests and you have to get stuff from your friends or you can't move on, blah blah blah. Fbook should bring back games people can chat with each other during the game easily on screen and yet have enough of something interesting enough to do when you don't feel like chatting. And be able to play the game completely by yourself if you choose to do so.
  • mother3  •  3 months ago
Petville has so many problems that keep popping up that it makes playing annoying.
