The final frontier: ‘Spock’ done with Trek conventions

Leonard Nimoy is boldly going where few Star Trek actors have gone before: away from the convention scene.

Leonard Nimoy (Getty Images)The 80-year-old actor, who has played the logical U.S.S Enterprise science officer Spock since the show's inception, said his farewell to die-hard conventioneers after attending his final Star Trek con in Chicago this past weekend, reports AP.

After speaking about his life and career for about a hour, Nimoy thanked fans for their support over the years, held up his famous four-fingered salute, and offered them a final "Live long and prosper."

"So much to be thankful for," Nimoy later tweeted. "The wave of kindness from the crowd. My family there. LLAP."

Adam Malin, CEO of Star Trek convention organizer Creation Entertainment, said that Nimoy "will be missed."

That's an understatement. Nimoy has been with Star Trek since the very beginning, having first portrayed Spock in the original show's unaired 1964 pilot. He'd go on to embody the Vulcan for four decades in countless shows and films, most recently in J.J. Abrams's acclaimed 2009 reboot of the franchise, where he passed the torch to Zachary Quinto.

While Nimoy has publicly stated that he'll no longer don the Vulcan ears to play Spock in any future Trek endeavor, the actor will next appear as a wise Eagle in the animated feature "Zambezia."

To recap and reminisce~ LLAP, Mr. Nimoy. But if we recall the immortal words of Dr. McCoy (De Forest Kelley) in the last minutes of "Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn" and allow me to paraphrase, "He isn't gone, as long as we remember him." Enjoy retirement, Mr. Nimoy. You gave us the best. Fondly remembered. At the least, those of us at Nimoy's farewell Conventions, Las Vegas and Chicago~ we got to say good bye. A memory that will last forever.

I watched Star Trek with my Dad; we watched it without speaking much during the show. I look back on it now as one of my fondest childhood memmories. Thank you Mr Nimoy. I think you really meant every LLAP which was mostly geared to the audience. And now it is my turn. LLAP and Godspeed.

Same here!! We went nuts with it. When a new movie came out it went like this. 1 out watch it, 2 out watch 1 watch 2, 3 out watch 1 watch 2 watch 3, 4 out watch 1 watch 2 watch 3 watch 4, 5 out..... we started watching so many movies in one day that it turned into all weekend events lol! + we watched ST TNG when it came out. I wasnt born when the org show aired. But once TNG started going we watched them all that came after DS9 VOY Enterprise. Was 9 when TNG started airing loved watching it with my family. My mom liked them to so it was cool watching it the amount we did back then. Its hard for my Dad to watch the last season of Enterprise cause my mom passed away that year :(

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Nimoy once and it was not at a Star Trek convention. He was very nice and I was surprised that he had such a good sense of humor. Very down to earth (no pun intended) and was not a typical Hollywood snob. Good all around guy.

That is very true. You won't find that kind of quality in most of the actors of today; or many plain old people either.

Star Trek will live forever in the hearts of the fans--young & old. Mr. Nimoy was & is a world class act. His "logic" on the show gave it a much needed dimension. As with the other actors on Trek--- he will be missed, but surely not forgotten. LLAP, Spock!!!!!!!!!

Like another post here, you inspired me as a child to embrace science and pursue life as an engineer where I spent my entire career, Mr. Nimoy. Spock was my idol! I'm retired now too, and I have always admired your great acting talent wherever you appeared. Know that you are admired by many. You deserve the honor.

Thank you, Mr. Nimoy, for portraying such a wonderful character, Mr. Spock, all these many years. I watched the first episode in the fall of 1966, and knew I wouldn't and couldn't miss any of the rest. "Star Trek" replaced "Man from Uncle" as my fav show, and I thought Robert Vaughn and David McCallen were pretty hot. Such a wise and brave character will never be forgotten. He truly went where no man had gone before. Live Long and Prosper, dear one!

I remember the first time I met Mr. Nimoy was at a "convention" at S.I.U. Edwardsville, IL back in 1973 or 74. His presence will surely be missed. Peace and Long Life Mr. Nimoy and
    thank you.

An identifying element of "class" is knowing when to quit. Thank you, Mr. Nimoy. You've given of yourself for many years and in many ways. It has been greatly appreciated. LLAP.
