Five great laptops for gaming

When it comes to playing PC games, portability is often sacrificed. The true monster machines are almost always burly desktops.

But that doesn't mean all is lost for gamers who want to be able to take their systems on the road. While mobile graphics chips aren't quite as advanced as their desktop counterparts, some can still push polygons at an incredible pace.

That power comes at a premium, though. If you want a gaming laptop that's going to handle a Crysis or Far Cry with ease, it's going to cost you. For a variety of budgets, here are five worth considering.

Budget Options

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830TG-6431

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830TG-643The name's a nightmare, but this is one of the most powerful thin laptops on the market -- and one of the best choices if you plan to do a lot of gaming on the go.

It's packed with a speedy i5 processor and weights less than 5 pounds. The screen size is a bit smaller than most, coming in at just over 13 inches, but with a fantastic price of under $800, that could be a compromise you can live with. [Buy | Search]

Dell Inspiron

Dell InspironSeriously? Seriously. If you're on a tight budget, grabbing an Inspiron is one of your most affordable options.

Though Dell's popular laptop model isn't specifically made for gaming, it's equipped with second generation Intel Core processors, giving it plenty of speed. Screen size goes up to a roomy 17 inches, but also have 14- and 15-inch options if you're looking for something that's a little more portable. They even come with customizable outer shells, letting you put your own stamp on your rig.

But the real reason to care? The price. They start as low as $499, though you'll need to spend a bit more than that to make it a viable gaming rig. Still, for under $850, you can get a fast machine with a big screen that can handle today's most demanding games. [Buy| Search]

Pricey Options

Origin PC EON17-S
Origin PC EON17-S

Boasting great graphics and easy overclocking, Origin's flagship laptop is extremely customizable and lets gamers tweak things to the tiniest detail. And seeing as people who own screamingly fast gaming desktop rigs often like to build them themselves, that's a big bonus.

Origin systems are often compared to Alienware -- that's understandable, as former Alienware employees founded the company. Like that brand, though, you'll pay dearly for the speed. The EON 17-S starts at nearly $1,700 and can run as high as $3,600. [Search]

Alienware M18X

Alienware M18XAlienware has long been one of the biggest names in gaming PCs, so it's not surprising that the company knows how to make a blazingly fast gaming laptop, too. The M18X boasts an 18-inch screen, an Intel Core i7 chip (the fastest on the market today) and oodles of configuration options, letting you decide exactly what you want in your system.

The downside? It's bulky, chunky and isn't exactly sleek in its aesthetic design. Plus, the M18X will cost you a few months rent. Prices start at $1,999 and can range all the way up to more than $5,000. [Buy | Search]

'Coming Soon' Option

Razer Blade

Razer BladeCertainly the coolest named gaming laptop in this bunch, the Blade has yet to hit shelves, but it has plenty of people curious.

Razer, generally known as a maker of gaming peripherals and mice, announced its first laptop last August, then went silent. The device was on display at CES this year, though, and the company was giving demos to select media outlets. Razer has replaced the touchpad with a screen and eight LED keys, which can be configured however a gamer wants (and can even be used as a small second screen). The system lacks an optical drive, though it does have a hefty 256 GB SSD hard drive. It also comes with a price tag of over $2,700. [Search]

Asus - 8 gig ram, 2 gig video, i7 chip, HDMI, and 1 TB HD for 1100-1200 dollars at Best Buy. U must be getting a kickback for recommending the above CPU's.

Such a poor, horrible and incomplete discussion from Yahoo. I am not surprised coming from Yahoo. Most of the articles, from their different sections (money, cars etc.) are worthless. Many authors/freee lance editors hired do not know what they are speaking about. I do not have any expecations left when I read these articles that they say anything accurate.

Uh huh, ironic you probably learn more from the comments.
    • Charles 3 months ago
That is sometimes true, interested in those comments, and the added information there. Yahoo needs to really qualify these article writers, as they are so badly informed!

Not one mention of an ASUS Republic of Gamers (which can go for relatively cheap), but you mention Acer and Dell Inspiron? Are you high?
    • Charles J 3 months ago
Yeah, ASUS is a real player now. I like just about ALL their products--and the price.
  • Chris  •  Seattle, Washington  •  3 months ago
should give more specs. no mention of gpu. most games now a days you have to have a nvidia or ati graphics card. if you have a integrated intel graphics card some new games wont even run like battlefield 3.

also failed to mention asus. i own 2. one older but was top of the line when i got with a 9800 geforce card and dual core. still plays all games just some on low settings now. and i have a newer one that has a gtx560 card that is an i7 that i paid 1200 from bestbuy for and it can play all games and most on high to highest settings. and it even stays cool. vents out the back so you can keep in lap or on bad.

first 2 commandments on pc gaming:

    1. Thou shall not game on a laptop.
    2. Thou shall not game wirelessly.

i think Mr. Morris offended alot of gamers in this rushed post.
First of all you have to research before you post some stupid bunch of words that will be read by millions of people.
The great gaming laptops would definely come from (well this is based on my experience)
Origin PC, MSI, Asus, Sager, Aleinware(yeah i know customers service and sometimes they are defective but still their specs are still at top if you can afford the price),

and others i have'nt had experience that interest me are:
    CyberPower, Lenovo, Clevo

First to any threads on getting desktop over latop...Yes of course desktop FTW! Unfortunatly some people need to travel (I myself just toured Europe and am going to New Zealand now before heading back home). I also have deployed 2 times and been TDY a few (military). Also when you move u have to wait for your stuff. Having a good gaming laptop is awesome for playing games and movies and stuff on the go.

Also Razer is a blah company. They make "cool" things which attract the fanboys and often do have good ideas. Just just have poorly made products with lights and designs to make people go oooooo andovercharge for them. And then they'll break a week later. So buy at your own risk. Alienware kinda went downhil as well after being bought out by dell. Id imagine Origin would be a good company but dont know for sure.

Forget the pricier options here. Go for the ASUS G 73 and newer models. I paid $1600 for mine 1.5 years ago, 8Gig ram, I-7, ATI 5870 and 1 TB !!! harddrive plus Bluray and surround sound. Alienware would have been double or triple that at the time...

I've been reading alot of these comments and I think this is great forum to ask this question b/c you all seem to know MUCH more about laptops than I ever will, but I'm looking to replace my 5 year old Dell Inspiron E1505. I didn't so much use it for hardcore gaming but I did throw some games like NFS Carbon, FEAR, MW1, Starcraft, among a few others at it and it worked fine. But I'm looking to find a new laptop within the next month or so and it would be nice to have at least a small pool of great quality laptops to research and pick from. I'm not necessarily going to use it for gaming b/c I will mostly use it for work and such, but I wouldn't mind getting back into some PC gaming that I abandoned awhile ago simply because my laptop couldn't handle it. I don't need anything super fancy/pricey...just a great, quality, dependable machine that has a good processor, video card, RAM, memory, etc....If you could leave your Top 5 laptops you'd recommend that would be extremely helpful! Thanks a bunch guys.

  • Larissa  •  Denver, Colorado  •  3 months ago
I had an Alienware 9 years ago... HATED it. $3,000 for a laptop that was more like a brick. Crashed all the time, over heated, could only have half the ram in (I had two sticks of 256) at a time... just ... not good. Perhaps they are better now but, I wouldn't buy one again.
  • Nick B  •  Pharr, Texas  •  3 months ago
you do notice that they didnt even mention the graphics capabilities.....and what do you think makes a gameing laptop....not the led keyboard......its the graphics card.
