Gamer’s death at internet cafe goes unnoticed for nine hours

Gamers at internet cafe in China (Getty Images)It's easy to get absorbed in a game, but it's another thing entirely to be so absorbed that you don't notice the guy next to you has died.

Gamers in a Taipei internet café failed to notice the newly deceased for a staggering amount of time earlier this week. Officials estimate that 23-year-old gamer Chen Rong-yu had been dead up to nine hours before anyone realized it.

Rong-yu entered the café to play popular online game League of Legends on Tuesday evening, and was there for quite a while. Witnesses saw him on his cell phone around noon on Wednesday (still playing), but on Wednesday evening a waitress found his corpse, sitting rigidly in the chair with his hands still stretching toward the computer.

Initial reports indicate Rong-yu suffered cardiac arrest brought on by blood clots. Those clots likely formed due to cold temperatures, his lack of movement, and general exhaustion. Rong-yu was reportedly treated for a heart condition last year, though police are still investigating the matter.

While it's rare for gamers to pass away while playing, it's not unheard of — especially in Internet cafes. Players tend to concentrate intensely on their games, ignoring factors like the body's need for sleep and food.

Last year, a 30-year-old Chinese gamer died after staying up for three consecutive days, barely eating or drinking anything. In that case, however, fellow gamers noticed the problem immediately and he was rushed to a hospital, but could not be revived. In 2005, a South Korean gamer suffered the same fate after a 50-hour marathon session of Starcraft at another internet café.

The issue is hardly constrained to internet cafes in Asia. Last August, 20-year-old Chris Staniforth suffered a pulmonary embolism after a marathon session on his Xbox.

The deaths underscore the risk of game addiction, which more and more people are becoming increasingly worried about as the industry grows.

There are people dying of cardiac arrest everyday. Just because this guy happened to be playing a game it doesn't mean it's life-threatening. There are a lot more people dying of the same cause in long flights or being taxi/bus drivers etc. On the other hand, nobody noticing a person dead for 9 hours in a crowded public place is shocking.

Sitting on a long, international flight or behind a desk - inside a cubicle - all day carries the same risks.

So do just pcs & 360s kill people or do nintendo & sony devices do as well?

either way, its pathetic to be on a video game for that length of time.some people just need to get out and get some sun.

all of them if your sitting for long periods of time your at risk of developing blodclots which can then reach your heart and kill you so as long as you stand up while playing every now and then your all good also if you play

Few people die at their desks or on International flights...not saying it hasn't happened..just few do. Still it's sad. Addictions are terrible and often end in fatalities

it said the same about video gaming "While it's rare for gamers to pass away while playing, it's not unheard of" in fact i think sitting at desks would be more common as many jobs require sitting at desks hours at a time before they're allowed breaks e.g call centres etc but when videogaming there is almost always a point in the game where you have the opportunity to have a break e.g waiting for the next level to load or waiting to respawn etc

And I am sure people will now use this story to talk about how "bad" video games are. *Shakes head* Is is NOT the norm, even among us gamers, to be THAT addicted. But stories like this make it seem like "While it's rare for gamers to pass away while playing, it's not unheard of — especially in Internet cafes. Players tend to concentrate intensely on their games, ignoring factors like the body's need for sleep and food."

I remember as a kid--a coworker of my dad's took his 12 year old kid's nintendo out into the driveway and backed over it because the kid peed on the carpet. He was so into his game... Ugh. But playing until you die? Wow.

let him drink from a bowl outside. he needs the sun anyways.

The kid peed on the carpet? #$%$ I would have taken the KID out in the driveway, and backed-over HIM.

I used to work with a guy whose kid pooped his pants because he didn't want to stop playing. His dad thought it was cute. I just thought it was very bad parenting that allowed it, and then did nothing to set limits. It's all about limits, people. Parents need to set them! Still, I think it was excessive to destroy the game like that...or maybe not. I wasn't there.

Another issue is lack of sleep. When we work on a computer at night for an extended period our brains are tricked into thinking it should stay awake because of the emission of light from the screen. The reality is, our brains NEED to wind down and go to sleep. But when in front of a computer that doesn't always happen like it should. We can miss the 'fatigue' message, thus becoming very overtired without realizing it. Add the stress of the game to that, which will keep your adrenal glands pumping cortisol overtime. Then the fatigued brain doesn't send the right messages to the rest of the body to keep functioning normally because it's so tired out. This is a heart attack waiting to happen, and GAME OVER.

I remember years ago when I use to play Final Fantasy 11. And while playing with Japanese and Chinese players late in the night they would always tell me that they couldn't play for long periods of time due to internet restriction times. Which they would say they would be gone for about fifteen minutes and would go log on at a cafe or some other place.

It's all just a matter of perspective.

There's no such thing as an "addict". "Junkies" don't seek out pleasurable substances or stimuli because they're addicted; they do it because the drive to avoid non-pleasurable situations is crucial for survival (based on the most widely accepted definition of "life").

Hey, it's better than the violence caused by prohibition (of any kind). Ask anyone living or working close to the US/Mexico border!

How often do they do a clean up at that place? Hard to believe they did not notice him in a 9 hour period.

Sad, but these comments are much sadder. A man has died. It is not funny. It is not something he deserved. How hateful you people are. If you died, would you want people to laugh about it or say you deserved it? Would you want your family to read hateful comments like this on a worldwide forum? Your hate and disrespect saddens me!
    • christopher 3 months ago
Honestly, I wouldn't care. Everyone dies eventually, what is there to be sad about? If the person is happy on how he dies, why should we be the ones to not laugh and joke around? When I die, assuming I die unexpectedly, I wouldn't want my family to sit around a moarn my passing, I'd much rather them party.
