January video game sales among the ugliest in recent memory

Still the king.To say the video game industry stumbled out of the gate in 2012 would be exceedingly kind.

January software sales, which are the most closely watched figure by investors, were down 34 percent - the biggest percentage drop in more than 2 years — to $750.6 million. That's more than $389 million less than a year ago.

Hardware sales plunged a shocking 38 percent to $195.5 million.

Analysts had expected a bad month, but nothing like this. The consensus on Wall Street was the industry was facing a 12 to 20 percent decline, due to the lack of any major releases in January.

That lack of new titles resulted in the best seller's list looking a lot like it did in December. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues to outsell all other titles, followed by Just Dance 3 and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

What's likely to worry investors is that the ugly January numbers follow a very disappointing December. Game sales fell off a cliff as the holiday drew close, resulting in a surprise 8 percent decline at the end of 2011.  That decline, for now at least, appears to be a freefall.

"While the lack of new launches was a major reason for software declines, games which launched in Q4'11 also performed poorly in Jan'12, down 31% in units compared to Q4'10 launches in Jan'11," said  NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "As shoppers were not drawn to stores due to new launch activity, this potentially impacted additional software purchases made on impulse."

February could slow the decline, but isn't likely to stop it. Titles like Twisted Metal, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and SSX should sell well, but none has "blockbuster" written on it. And while the launch of the PS Vita could bring a short term sales bump, analysts are worried about its longevity.

For the year, though, there's still cause for guarded optimism. Several big titles are due this year, including (perhaps) a new Grand Theft Auto. And that has some industry watchers less concerned.

"While we expect a January decline, we think that things will begin to pick up in the next few months as several high-profile games are scheduled for launch in the first half of the year," said Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities in the days before the numbers were released.

As for January, here's how the 10 top-selling games shook out:

1 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Activision Blizzzard
2 Just Dance 3 Ubisoft
3 Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Bethesda Softworks
4 NBA 2K12 Take 2 Interactive

How did Battlefield lose to JUST DANCE. I can see it losing to COD, but JUST DANCE and NBA 2K12. Also, I'm so surprised skyrim isn't number one.

Seriously Yahoo, stop trying to look smart when you are not.
Do yourself a favor and go watch Zero Punctuation and just QUOTE things from there. Save yourself some embaressment and actually get yahoo users to like your articles for having some WIN inside of them. Yeah, not your win, but it's better than what you have up here.

Speaking of Yahtzee: he states the obvious, as usual, in the manner that makes you look completely oblivous because Decemeber was the time a ton of games were released, so of course January is the time when there are barely any releases, there are no games to be released.

who has $70 to spend on a video game right after xmas ?
    • Jordan 3 months ago
      people with jobs...

A job doesn't mean you're buying video games after Christmas!! Unless you are still in high school or live at home. Most people catch up from Christmas spending. That's why the good games usually start coming out in mid February or early March (Mass Effect 3).

Did they consider the fact that for the price of 3 new games I can buy a whole console?

A lot of games didn't come out in Janaury. There are certain parts of the year where A LOT of games (good games!) are released. Yahoo! stop making a big deal out of something stupid (and common sense).

Imagine that. Shutting down MegaUpload didn't suddenly funnel millions of dollars into these people's pockets?

Money that they worked for and deserve you mean?

most of it goes to the publishers, who spend millions on advertising budgets, and take it out of the developers pay. and i dont think they deserve a single cent for that.

They should take down The Pirate Bay, that's the real problem.

Maybe people cant afford to pay sixty, seventy, eighty dollars for A new game.

If youre paying 80 bucks a game then someone is ripping u off

Many people can't afford many things that are more important than games...
So be grateful for what you can buy and stop feeling the vanity of guilt or upset for what others can't cause its always going to be like that... just the way of the world.

I but alot of games 180 for xbox 360 and at least 80 or so for ps3. The problem with january sales was no good games were released. If they would make more of an effort to release something worth buying sales would be better

No games came out that month. It isn't a shocker. In late 2011 There were tons of great games that came out. That is when everyone bought games. Now everyone is still playing those games, or are broke.

Could it be that gamers are tired of the same games over and over? Then theres CoD buy the game then 4 or 5 map packs at $20 a pop, and then a new CoD 12 months later then map packs for that one. We only have so much money! I stopped buying CoD spent my money on Skyrim and love it. More content less same old same old. Game copanies need to step out of the box. Look what happend to Guitar Hero\Rockband take a new idea and release 15 games in 4 years come on we are not made of money!

Not a shocker here. January has never been a good month for game sales as everybody is broke from all the holiday shopping. lol. Besides, no good games came out in January at all, except for Final Fantasy XIII-2, which didn't come out until the last day of the month. To my recollection, there have only been 2 January's in recent memory that have done pretty well. The years when Dead Space 2 and Mass Effect 2 released. They came out like in the 3rd week of the month so it gave January a good boost in sales. Other than that, January has always been terrible for games. There are usually only 6 months in the year that put out really good games and that's March-June and Sept.-Nov. The rest of the months are usually lackluster with possible diamonds in the rough on the off months. One such game could be Kingdoms of Amalur coming out this month. I played the demo and I definitely liked it.

crap games lacking content = poor sales figures. nobody has figured that out yet. im a big gamer but i only brought 3 games this whole last year
  • Reine  •  3 months ago
I save up my money for the video game rush of fall. And I'm only able to splurge enough cash for two, maybe three games. And plus, everyone usually buys the games for Christmas and holidays.

Black March Boycott protest ACTA, do NOT buy Movies, Music and Video Games for the month of March. Send a clear message to them and have them watch their profit margin drop. spread the word, starts 3-1-2012.

google it Black March, Operation Black March, Black March Protest and Black March Boycott.

the games continually disappoint despite the better graphics. I have NHL 12 and its one of the worst hockey games ever made. Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City were 100x better than anything out now, even the new GTA's
  • Your Pariah  •  3 months ago
why does yahoo feel the need to report this? this always happens, nothing has great sales 365 days of the year. games are no different. nov-dec. months will always have high sales. after that sales slow down to a crawl in the summer months, and pick up again in the fall.
