We're not making an endorsement here, but Audi may just be the most logical car on the road these days.
The automaker has released an online ad that pinpoints its target audience with phaser-like accuracy, pitting Leonard Nimoy's Spock against newcomer Zachary Quinto's Spock in a hilarious spot to pitch the Audi A7.
It's a geeky delight to see the two actors on screen together, both showing a fierce competitive streak unbecoming of a Vulcan:
After losing a game of chess (three-dimensional, of course) to the original Spock, Quinto suggests a race: First to the clubhouse buys lunch. Cue the car porn shots, the dramatic Star Trek-esque music and lens flare, right?
Well, yes... but that's not what makes this commercial a contender for the Geek Hall of Fame. We see Nimoy mutter (bleeped) obscenities. We see unusual storage methods. And best of all, we hear a song that every Trekkie worth his salt knows well, but hasn't heard for a long, long time.
Twist ending? Yep, it's got that, too. And, like most of today's best movies, if you stick around to the very end, you even get a quick bonus scene that ramps up the nerd joy one notch further.
At present, the ad is only online, fast becoming the standard for some of the most creative commercials these days. As television watchers skip past commercial breaks with joyful abandon, savoring them only a few times a year during big events like the Superbowl, ad companies have taken their best work to the web. May this one live long and prosper.
