PlayStation Vita to launch in the U.S. with 25 games

If you're still on the fence about buying a PlayStation Vita next year, Sony is hoping to give you a little nudge.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Sony)On Thursday the company revealed the full launch lineup for their next handheld system. All told, 25 games will be available on its February 22, 2012 launch day, with 100 more games currently in development.

Leading the launch day pack are new entries in big first-party franchises, such as Uncharted, ModNation Racers, Wipeout and Hot Shots Golf. Vita versions of third-party titles like FIFA Soccer, Rayman: Origins, Virtua Tennis and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 should also pique interest.

Sony is hoping to avoid the pitfalls of Nintendo's 3DS system, which launched in March with only 16 titles and saw its sales drop until a price cut revived interest late in the year.

The new portable arrives in two flavors for U.S. and Canadian consumers: a $249 standard Wifi model and a $299 model equipped with 3G/Wifi. The games will range in cost from $9.99 to $49.99.

Sony also revealed pricing for accessories, including memory cards required for saving game data.

The Vita, which packs a 5-inch OLED touchscreen, dual analog sticks, a rear touch panel, motion sensors, rear and front facing cameras and more, is a huge step up from the Sony's last handhled, the disastrous PSP Go.  It's a bold move from the company, which hasn't been a significant player in the portable space in recent years, taking a backseat to both Nintendo's various DS models and the upstart iOS devices from Apple.

What a list of garbage, except maybe uncharted. If the games were worth a crap I would go right out and buy one on release day. Just like the PSP, they opened with a bunch of garbage and stayed with a bunch of garbage. These guys might make good hardware but know nothing of up to date gaming. That's why every single thing they do in the gaming market lags behind everybody else. No clue as to what a good game is. I'm sure there'll be a host of those crappy turn based JRPG's like the rail riding Final Fantasy. What trash.

    $299.99 for the system
    $99.99 for the memory card
    $49.99 for the portable charger
$9.99~49.99 (mostly likly $49.99) per game

    Yeah!!!

Thats only $500+ dollars for a setup!!!!

That costs more than my #$%$ Xbox did. And they'll sell the games for sixty, trust me on that. And it's more like $600+This system will DEFINITELY sell, it only costs more than an Xbox 360.

    Japan is so lucky.

That list of games is laughable. If you buy a Vita for a game on that list your brain is broken.

Need to upgrade my PSP-1000, and my Atrix just isn't cutting it on the games front on the go. And before you say anything, i'm a PC gamer, with a PSP, and Atrix, and a PS2 in active rotation, a GC on Brawl Duty, and a DS... well, these days, mostly helping my friends trade Pokemon. Might pick up a 3DS just for FE13, if they ever release it stateside, but there you go. Day 1 Purchase for the 3G version, in case i want to enable later, and let's have some fun. Upscaled PSP games anyone?

it'll probably flop. If it could play old PS2 games like GTA: San Andreas and Vice City maybe new games like Arkham City mite be worth the purchase. I dont understand why they dont have this Vita where you can transfer data of the game you playing on PS3/PS2 and play it on VITA..they'll kill Nintendo 3DS just like that..oh well another future handheld disappointment.

Will be a flop like I said with PSP Go unless Sony starts to LEARN. Don't need rear touch panel, rear and front facing cameras, and all that other #$%$ Plus games starting at $40 for a handheld? Wait less than 6 months and don't buy the system -- price for wifi and 3g models will drop significantly. I say $159.99 for wifi and $199.99 for 3g/wifi.

I don't know why some people are still trying to compare it to the 3DS... or why they are pitting both against eachother... If you people haven't realized, the hand held market has changed over the years... Now both Nintendo and Sony have to compete against the mobile phone platform..

Yes, and no. Mobile phones as a whole can play games, but they are a still a ways off from being the handheld avid gamers would chose over their DS or Playstation. phones will definitely snag the casual gamer, but few, if any would play a game such as metal gear on their phone. the processor and ram can handle it, but the battery and play controls are weak in comparison to a good handheld videogame unit

I would be willing to bet a trillion dollars this is going to be a flop.
    • Domingo 4 months ago
That depends on the price. The playstation 3's retail price when it hit the stores was like $800 U.S dollars.

course it will. If you've noticed, Gaystation's only fans are 17 year old nerds. most real gamers go to the 360 and the casual gamers or kids to wii.
    • Adrian 4 months ago
lmao Yes, all the "real" gamers go to a system that breaks down every 3 months.

You would have been better off saying real gamers go to the PC.

I will be curious to see how well handhelds sell now with the increased popularity of tablets. I am guessing the pure gaming handheld market is about dead. My kids even want Ipad's instead of the newer Nintendo handhelds and they are 7 and 10.
    • yirmahyaw777 4 months ago
if it anything like psp is not strictly gaming jus superior gaming:)...music, movies, web browsing
    • Daniel 4 months ago
handhelds will be fine. For more complex games, the quality of play control is not the same as a handheld. multitouch just isn't quite there yet. tablets are great for the casual gamer though

    Sold!

...A few months later when the price drops.

But if Sony keeps this as what will launch, it'll demolish the 3DS in a heartbeat.
