Poll Vault: Link and Zelda, sitting in a tree…

All you need is love…and a video game console or two.

Valentine's minded gamers everywhere made a declaration of love this past week and cast their votes in our most recent poll: "What's your favorite video game couple?"

The winner? A Nintendo twosome, but not the one you might think.

With 28% (5,762) of your votes , Link and Zelda are the king and queen of the dance, proving once and for all that even the evil Ganon can't get in the way of Cupid's arrow.  Meanwhile, odds-on favorite Mario and Peach came up a tad short with 27% (5,038).

Indeed, old school rules: our third place couple, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man at 21% (3,778), have been together for a good 30 years.

Love wasn't quite so effortless for the bottom three couples, however. At 8% (1,511), Uncharted's Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher have only just begun their romantic journey, while Mass Effect's Commander Shepard and Liara only managed 6% (1,079).  And we're all still trying to figure out just what is going on between Half-Life's Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance, who wound up in last with 5% (802).

With Valentine's Day being the most love-filled day of the year, who's your favorite couple?

I refuse to call her Princess Peach. When I was growing up playing old school NES her name was Princess Toadstool.

But....that's her name: Princess Peach. If you *really* wanna get technical, you could call her 'Princess Peach Toadstool' as that's how she signed her name on the letter in Super Mario 64. In the Japanese version of the game, her name has ALWAYS been Princess Peach. When the original game was brought to U.S. shores, her name became Princess Toadstool due to a translation error. (Supposedly, anyway -- how the heck does one get 'Princess Toadstool' out of 'Piichi-hime', when that translates as 'Princess Peach' to begin with?)

So long story short: her original name is, and always HAS been Princess Peach. She's the SAME GIRL from the original Nintendo games (Super Mario Bros. 1,2, and 3), Super Mario World and so on and so forth.

For those of you who steadfastly refuse to believe it because "OMG, but her hair was a different color! That had to be a different chick!".....uhhhh...NO. It's the SAME girl EVERY TIME.

The only reason she had different colored hair in the first 3 games was because of graphical limitations of the time. Peach's hair (according to Shigeru Miyamoto) was always meant to have been blonde, but they were unable to do so. This is further proven in nearly all original cover art or promotional art ---- Peach's hair is always blonde. (I can think of maybe...2 exceptions to this).

The reason Princess Peach's/Toadstool's hair was red in the 80's cartoon was because they were basing the character designs off the Nintendo sprites in-game -- in which you see Peach with what appears to be flaming red hair, a white dress with a dark pink border.

For those of you still doubtful about this, consider this: I'm an avid Mario fan, and an especially avid fan of Peach (especially since Smash Bros. Melee) - have been playing these games since the 80's, and have read multiple interviews and magazine articles on the subject, and I know my stuff, silly as it might be.

Also, here's a tidbit for y'all: Bowser? In the original Japanese version of the game, and each game since, his name has always been Koopa. Ever wondered why they called him King Koopa in the cartoon? There's your answer. So like with Peach, his "full" name here in the U.S. would be "King Bowser Koopa".

also look at it this way. she was called princess toadstool because at the time she was the main female lead. then they introduced princess daisy ( i think shes peachs sister right? im going off the luigi and mario being brothers so their love interests being sisters ) them being sisters they would both be called princess toadstool..well isn't that confusing so they gave mario the peach colored princess and luigi the orangis yellow colored princess, since the inside of a daisy is that color. and thus PEACH and DAISY are born
