Batman: Arkham City (Warner Bros. Interactive)How do you follow a game as utterly stupendous as last year's superhero blockbuster Batman: Arkham City?
You go back to the beginning.
Variety is reporting that the next Batman game from Warner Bros. and developer Rocksteady Studios will zip back in time and act as a prequel to the terrific Arkham games. Based on the Silver Age of DC Comics (a period spanning the 1950s through the 1970s), the game will explore Batman's first meeting with The Joker and is due out in 2014.
The Silver Age setting also hints that the Dark Knight could possibly team up with other members of the Justice League, including the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern, a move that Variety notes is in tune with Warner Bros. and DC's overall strategy to replicate the success Marvel has enjoyed with The Avengers.
Batman: Arkham City and 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum were big commercial and critical hits for Warner Bros. The two have combined sales of over 10 million copies and each raked in scores of Game of the Year awards.
Warner Bros. recently paired Batman with other heroes in Lego Batman 2. Another game featuring Justice League characters, the brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us, is due out in 2013.
