Rick Santorum’s video game secret

(Photo credit: Getty Images)While Mitt Romney might be giving Rick Santorum a bruising fight in the race for the Republican party's bid for the White House, there's one platform where Santorum is sure he tops his opponent: gaming.

The former Pennsylvania senator, it seems, has a passion for the iPhone game Temple Run, a title that has players endlessly fleeing a band of screaming, angry simians after defiling their temple.

Of course, in the polarizing world of video games, one never wants to offend fans of other games. That's why Santorum was quick to point out his former love for another popular title when asked about his dedication to Temple Run.

"I'm addicted to it," Santorum told Flip the Media. "It used to be Angry Birds, but now it's Temple Run."

News of the contender's gaming habits came, as these sorts of revelations often do, from his children. His daughter, in fact, boasted that her father had scored more than 1 million points in the game.

Santorum notes that it was his kids who loaded the game onto on his iPad, then warned him not to play it because it was addictive.

Even though the Supreme Court ruled that video games are protected by the First Amendment -- which essentially took them off the hot plate during this election year -- they've still become an issue in the 2012 presidential race. President Obama, you might recall, was fairly vocal in decrying them when he first took office, but has softened that stance as the election neared.

Last year, he took the press gaggle with him when he picked up copies of Just Dance 3 and The Sims 3 for his daughters' Christmas present. And earlier this month, he hired a senior policy analyst to study the benefits of video games.

Romney, by the way, hasn't attached himself to any game that we're aware of, though GamesRadar (in its excellent round-up of where the candidates stand on video games) notes that he hasn't shown himself to be a fan of any of them historically.

"a title that has players endlessly fleeing a band of screaming, angry simians after defiling their temple." This being the super religious social conservative, does anyone find this ironic?

    Governor? Who writes this stuff?
  • John  •  2 months ago
Is it just me or does anyone else see the irony that Santorum, with his radical religious convictions, relishes a game where the protagonist is defiling the temple of a lesser culture?

Romney, sometimes, I don't understand political ads. Sometimes, I don't get which group of voters a political ad is aimed at/shooting for/trying to penetrate. For example, do you think gun victims that survived,and/or relatives, and friends of gun victims that did not survive....find the Santorum political ad that shows a look alike for Romeny trying to shoot a cardboard of Santorum...just loaded with automatic load, after load of laughs....or, was the ad meant to give a twisted relief to the jared loughner types, and perhaps they are exploding with laughter. Romney, if you have a soft side, please apologize to Ms Gabby, and to all of the gun shot victims, their relatives, and friends for the Santorum political ad that uses Guns, and Politicians in the same destructive scene...............thank you.
