How to beat The Claw

Squatting menacingly in the corner of your favorite restaurant, movie theater, supermarket or bowling alley, the claw machine is a harsh mistress. There's something unmistakably hostile about its steely, three- or four-fingered grip, and something immeasurably frustrating about the feeling of horror and loss you get as your prize slips from your tenuous grasp at the very last second.

Don't despair. Instead, even the odds a little. Follow these simple tips, and you can't lose. (OK, you can lose, but you'll lose a little less often.)

Study your machine

The more tempting and desirable the prizes, the lower the chances you'll win. Expect machines with expensive prizes to have claws that move faster, grip looser, and generally do everything possible to foil your attempts to snag their contents. If all you want to do is win something, machines with cheaper prizes are a better bet.

Another good idea? Look for machines that aren't packed tight with prizes -- a little space can go a long way. It's also worth sizing up the pile of goodies. Are they stacked in such a way as to make it hard to pull them apart? If the prize you want is tucked under another toy, it's going to be that much harder to grab, as the claw typically isn't strong enough to dig a toy out from underneath other objects.  Perhaps a little strategic repositioning is in order before you tackle the big prize -- or perhaps there's another machine with a more favorable arrangement.

Timing is everything

Don't be afraid to take your time. Depending on the machine, you'll likely have a total of 15 or 30 seconds to hit the all-important "Drop" button. There's no harm in taking almost all of that to make sure your alignment is dead-on. Plan to hit the button when there's about five seconds left on the clock, and you'll have ample time for the machine to haul out whatever you've snagged.

Use a spotter

Having two eyes is overrated. Unless you're some sort of ping-pong prodigy, your depth perception probably ain't all that -- and if you want to boost your chances of snagging that awesome claw-machine prize, you're going to need some way of augmenting it. Some sort of cybernetic implant would be ideal, but if you can't swing that, find yourself an accomplice.

How's that going to help? You look after the side-to-side alignment, and have your partner stand around the corner of the machine and take care of the front-back direction. No matter how lousy your depth perception might be, as long as your spotter is on the ball, you'll drop the claw right on the prize every time.

Watch and wait

But that might not be enough. According to a report on the British show Brainiac, some claw machines are configured so that four times out of five (or nine times out of ten) they'll deliberately grab the toy with a greatly weakened grip. Only on that lucky fifth run will it use enough force to actually keep hold of the prize. In other words, they're rigged.

True? False? Nobody seems to know for sure -- except the manufacturers, and you can bet they're keeping a tight grip on the info. Still, if you're sizing up a busy machine, it may make sense to watch other players and see if there's a pattern to their wins and losses.

Ask Noah for a little help

If all else fails, give Noah Jeffrey a call. This three-year-old Australian toddler made himself a hero to all disgruntled claw machine players a few weeks ago when he squeezed his way inside one of the devices and began handing out prizes to passers-by. There's nothing quite like the direct approach.

Don't try this at home, though, even if you do have a cooperative three-year-old on hand. Noah reportedly found the machine hot, lacking in oxygen, and uncomfortable, and almost had to be rescued by the fire department. He was unscathed by his adventure, but your little brother and/or sister might not be so fortunate.

I used to be a manager of a movie theater for a couple of years (best job in the world, worst pay in the world). We had a company that provided all the arcade machines and of course the claw machines. I got along with the owner of the games really well and we talked often. Over time I noticed that his claw machines were very easy to win prizes with and told him how easy it was to win. He would have to come in often to refill the machines (almost once a week). He then said, he just cares that the kids are happy. After he told me that, that is when I realized you could change the the grip of the claw for difficulty. He mentioned that, even though the profit margine is very small to none at all, he isn't losing any money from it and didn't mind. One of our managers realized that our soda dispenser keys actually unlocked the claw machine too. Told him about it and he just laughed and told us to give a kid a prize if we happen to notice he didn't win anything. That, is probably the best person I ever knew.

If people don't win sometimes, they won't play again. Its a Reward mindset. The Bigger claws don't have the same strength as the leverage is weak on a big claw. It can take hundreds of dollars of animals to fill one machine, a usual cut for the onwer is only about 30% of profits Before the cost of animals and taxes meaning owners don't make jack after gas expenses and repairs.

They are rigged for sure. I had a friend that owned some of these and he could make adjustments to make the grip weaker. Some machines in some, but not all Denny's Restaurants, have a claw that you can lower and drag around before hitting the button to grab your prize. Look for the machines that have a joystick with the button on top of it. Most people don't know about that trick. I used to go in this one Denny's and I could spend
$3 dollars and walk out with 4 or 5 stuffed animals. Once in awhile I'd miss one or two. Now I can't guarentee that all these types with the button on the joy stick allows this, but hey, if it doesn't, you've only spent 50 cents to try it. If it works, great, clean 'em out!

OOPS! I forgot one important detail on those machines with the button on the joy stick. You must press the button and keep holding it after the hooks lower. If you slip off the button, the hooks close to soon. Keep holding it while you move the joystick around dragging the hooks, then when you have a target let go and the hook should grab it. I sometimes waste a dollar just loosening stuff up, then I get a bunch more prizes. (If I hadn't added this a lot of people would have been very upset with me!) LOL!

      Good Luck!

I've emptied an entire machine a few times, it wasn't that hard and didn't spend a whole lot of cash (less than $10) Get lucky enough to grab double for 50cents, next turn win another. I never need a "partner" for this. Not a whole lot of skill is really required. Just know the strong spots of stuffed animal, look both sides of glass, look at surroundings of prize and GO!

My favorite claw machines were the candy ones. Didn't get a prize? Go again!

Its true some machines have pre scheduled better grip. Some machines are much better. I have won over 400 animals. I took half of one machine that was a quarter machine with smaller prizes. For less than ten dollars. I have gotten two full size prizes at one grab 23 times. I have gotton three at a time once. Don't try to get the ones stuffed in. Let someone else get them up an out. And reap the spoils. I got a Selvester with tweety in his out streched hand. but he would only go down the hole one way. so after I got him to the chut I had to move him twise to get him out. I picked up one with a ribbon coller. the coller got caught ona screw on the claw an never came out.

My brother wins most of the time on these usually nothing he wants though so he gives them to people. I tried winning a pink domo at a local kmart store but I couldnt win.
  • Call_me_M  •  2 months ago
I used to play it almost every single day. For me, the trick to winning was this: when you hit the drop button, the claw needs to hook either under the arm, in between the legs or in a ribbon of the toy you want. Hopefully, when it rises, it will catch under the arm or between the ribbon and drop in the box. You definitely need a strategy but if you keep at it, you will find the right setup and eventually you will win.

I remember seeing a LOOSE doll, on top of a pile. with a HUGE head, easy to grab, sticking straight up.
Now, the last time I tried this, I was like 5, but this time I was in my teens, and felt this was the perfect revenge, there's NO possible way I could fail...
    dot dot dot...
I start the game, put the crane perfectly over the head, the claws open, and drop...
a PERFECT drop. The claws clasp around the dolls head.
    It was beautiful...
With an eye for basic physics, this claw, with even 1% of it's normal strength, was lifting this bad boy up.
When the claw was ready to lift up, it literally "lets go" of the item. When the claw got to the top of the head, it closed again, and continues to rise up.

I watched many ppl walk by, and do the same thing, and saw this happen over and over.

I knew they were rigged, and I've never bothered again.

Love these machines!!!! I just can't resist when I see one. Couple more tips:

Pick up the toy at the middle or heavier part.
Watch the claw couple of times, sometimes they rotate, you can use that to your advantage.

A better tip than any of those mentioned: Look for a 2 prong claw machine. Some of the newer claw machines are 2 prong, and I can win a prize on those in usually 5 attempts or less. The strategy isn't trying to pick up the prize and drop it, it's looking for something near the drop hole that isn't buried under something else. Simply use the claw to knock it in the hole rather than trying to pick it up. In my entire life, I won on a traditional claw machine maybe once or twice. I realistically win about 15-20% of the time these days using the tip I just explained.
