Despite digital gadgets, half of UK families still play board games

(Getty Images)Our lives might be awash with high-tech gaming gadgets like Apple's iPad and Sony's new Playstation Vita, but board games are still holding their own, according to a new survey from the other side of the pond.

The survey, conducted by life insurance company Aviva, found that some 54% of British families still play board games together -- and a full three-quarters of parents are happy to let the kids win.

In what's nothing if not a diverse selection of other discoveries, it also found road-trip singalongs remain a popular pastime for nearly two-thirds of families, and while most households still sit down together for a meal at weekends, less than one in six children help with the dishes afterwards.

"The fast pace of modern life means that sometimes we take everyday things for granted," commented Louise Colley, Aviva's head of protection sales and marketing. "But it's really heart-warming to see that so many families still get a kick out of such basic things as going for a walk or watching a film together."

Heart-warming? She hasn't seen our clan after a rousing game of Risk. Trust us, the only hearts that are getting warmed around here are those of the losers, impaled on sticks and roasting gently over an open fire.

Games are a good family device. They really can become habits; and moments when
you talk about other stuff or eat favorite family foods-drinks, while the game enfolds. When
I visited my dad, we always played a game/had a drink/ ate some limburger; it was
wonderful. He usually won. I remember him that way. I loved him so much. It is not
old-fashioned to love your dad, or to play cards/board games/checkers/chess. It's nice.

My wife and I play board games and cards all the time, most of the crap on TV is not worth watching.

I remember playing Monopoly, Parchesi, Scrabble, Chinese checkers, dominoes, Candy Land and Mousetrap with the family on winter nights when we were lucky enough to pull our father away from watching all the westerns on the TV. Board games remind me of rainy summer days when we played them on the screened porch. We always played baseball, rode bikes and many active games which required no special equipment. We always got jacks, marbles, card games and jump ropes in our Easter baskets. Hula hoops were the biggest fad in the '50s. Everybody on the street had one.

instead of talkign to each other, people are going on there crappy little "phones"(which half the time they dont even use for phones)

im not saying all of the technology is bad, but these people use it so much it takes control of them.

I still enjoy playing board games with my now young-adult children and my folks. Another fun almost-freebie (we buy food and drinks) is trivia night at the local bar.

You can't get kids and some adults to sit down to a meal together without answering their phone and texting. It's hard to find a family that eats together anymore let alone play together.

My family eats together. Every now and then, we will just sit down and talk. The same with some of my other classmates.

Good for the UK! I happen to love board games, including obscure math-related board games such as Tribulation. Mario Party was one of my favorite video game series as a kid. It brought together two things I was very fond of: board games and video games.

Interesting story. However I have to facepalm every time Yahoo has an orgasm for Apple products. The iPad is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a hi-tech gaming device. Never was intended to be. It's not one now. It never will be. The end. STOP with the Apple gaming #$%$ Angry Birds and Words with Friends aren't "hi-tech" games.

After living in a small village 2hrs from London the slower pace is the plan of the day! It was hard to adapt. I was told by a Brit 'You americans need to learn, hast makes waste!'. It was hard for this American with HAD,ADD to take but board games was a great place to start. More so when you realize we didn't have video games,or TV. Board games were also worked into home school lessons. As I recall playing board games were the few times we were calm, At least the 1st 20 min.

Due to having majority of their incomes to taxes...they cannot afford the tech games and such...a board game is cheap.
