Spelldown is a simple yet challenging word game. The object is to collect points by spelling specific-sized words and collecting bonus points.
Spelldown is played in rounds. You start each game with six letters and five minutes. In the first round, you must create a three-letter word. In each subsequent round, words will get longer and harder to create. As you play, the clock ticks down. You can gain time bonuses by creating words with high-point values. Players can also discard letters by dragging them to the discard icon. But be careful! For each letter you discard, 10 seconds is taken off the clock.
To place a letter, simply click and drag it to the spot on the game board on which you wish to place it. Once you have spelled a word (or words), click the "Submit Words" button. You may also move letters after they have been placed on the game board by dragging them to a new spot. If you get stumped or are just weak willed, you can always click the "Give Up" button on the left side. This will end your current game and start a new one.
The amount of points you gain per word is determined by the total value of all the letters used to create the word. Each letter has a point value. It is shown in the upper right of the letter tile. This number is the point value of the letter. You also can gain point bonuses from multipliers and rare words. Additionally, spelling words worth a high amount of points will also net you time bonuses.
On the game board, you will sometimes notice a shaded "x2" or "x3". These are multipliers. Each time you submit a valid word the point value for the letter on the multiplier will be doubled or tripled. Obviously, it's in your best interest to place letters worth more points on multipliers.
Spelldown keeps a list of every word in the dictionary with a count of how many times it has been spelled. It also tracks the last time and date a word is spelled. Words that haven't been spelled recently are worth a point bonus. These bonuses range anywhere from 1 bonus point all the way up to 150 bonus points!
When you start the game, the clock is set at five minutes. After you begin the game, the clock starts counting down until it reaches zero, at which point the game ends. However, if you spell a word worth a lot of points, you will gain a "time bonus" that will add time back to the clock. These are based off your average score per letter. So, try and spell words worth a lot of points!
