If the other side does pick up the discard pile first, often it's best to try to cut your losses and go out as quickly as possible. Otherwise, the other side, with control of so many cards, will probably keep making canastas and melds at a higher rate than you. When it seems likely that an opponent will go out soon--and this is always a danger once an opponent has picked up the discard pile--you should meld at least your higher-scoring cards. This will not only prevent you from being caught with them in your hand but will also limit your opponents' safe discards to ones that you cannot add to existing melds.
