Fortunately, the boffins at Fantasy Flight Games have plenty of imagination.The tabletop version abstracts and simplifies many of the nuts and bolts of board-game combat, but smartly keeps Gears’ defining mechanics -- cover, cooperation, and dirty great assault rifles with chainsaws strapped to them -- rich, satisfying, and most of all, authentic. It’s not the shortest of games, running easily to 2-3 hours, but the time will fly by faster than a wretch who caught a grenade. It’s the next best thing to the real thing.
