Charles Babbage is also credited with building the first computer. Ada Byron The Countess of Lovelace worked with Babbage and became known as the first computer programmer.

She was hot too.... What happened ladies!? Software engineering was founded by a woman and men dominate it!? We need more ladies in this field.

We have to give the men something.. they can't hunt and protect anymore.. so we let them play with the software.. oh my.. that sounded really wrong.. but you know what I mean! lol. (I'm not serious by the way, I'm kidding.)

Silly Yahoo! A Babbage Difference Engine isn't a Rube Goldberg device. Rube Goldberg is a device which is intentionally overly complex for comedic purposes (like the OK Go video). A Babbage Difference Engine, on the other hand uses all of its pieces. It is exactly as complex as it needs to be, and is an awesome creation.

Lego originated (and is still headquartered) in Denmark. Germany is, however, one of the largest markets for Lego.

The existence of such machines has been suggested as an argument against the notion of computers ever becoming "self-aware" and taking over the earth. Think about it - this is a realtively simple machine, but any calculating machine - even the most sophisticated computer in the world - could be built with legos! Such a machine would probably be as big as Jupiter or something, but theoretically it would work. Can you imagine a giant lego computer ever becoming self-aware? Probably not. And that's the argument against computers made of silicon, diodes, etc. ever becoming self-aware.
