Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka are more than just game designers. They're two of the most genuine and talented people in the video game industry.

Together, they built Bioware into a powerhouse development studio and were the guiding forces behind hit games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Mass Effect.

That makes their departure from the video game industry not only a loss to those who worked alongside them, but a big blow to gamers as well.

Zeschuk and Muzyka announced their plans to leave EA and Bioware -- and leave the video game industry as a whole -- on Tuesday in separate blog posts. Muzyka says he plans to move into the venture capital/angel investing business. Zeschuk's plans are more surprising: He plans to work on projects related to beer.

"After my departure I'm going to be spending significant time with family and friends, as well as pursuing some personal passion-driven projects related to craft beer," he wrote.
"The main project I will be working on is a web-based interview show called The Beer Diaries where I interview notable brewers and showcase their beers. If things go well, I'll work on other beer-related shows, apps and projects."

As for Muzyka, he writes: "I now desire to take on a brand new entrepreneurial challenge. I believe strongly in the power of free enterprise to enable sustainable change, so my next 'chapter' will likely focus on an entirely new industry, something exciting, different and frankly downright scary — investing in and mentoring new entrepreneurs, and more specifically, the field of social/impact investing."

Bioware will continue on as an EA studio — Zeschuk and Muzyka both take pains to point out the incredibly talented staff that remains and say they're certain the studio's quality level will remain constant. Still, the loss of Zeschuk and Muzyka is a terrific blow.

It's not the first major career change for the two developers. Before getting into video game development, Zeschuk and Muzyka were both doctors and retain their medical licenses.

Their resumes, it seems, are just as diverse as the games they created.
