On Wednesday, EA announced that Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has been named the official cover athlete for Madden NFL 13.
Johnson narrowly edged out Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton in the finals of the Madden Cover tournament, earning 52% of the vote to take home the honor. Over 19 million fan votes were cast over the course of the tournament, which began back in March.
It was a bit of a surprising win for Johnson, who began the tournament as a middling six seed. He managed to beat out some other strong contenders along the way -- including Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers -- but faced an uphill battle against Newton, a top-seeded wrecking ball.
It's just the latest feat for the imposing receiver, who is coming off an incredible season in which he racked up 1,681 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. His offseason has been just as impressive, including signing a monstrous contract extension.
Hopefully, that includes a 'Madden Curse' clause. Last year's Madden cover boy, Peyton Hillis, became the latest victim of the on-again, off-again curse with a big dropoff in performance, a scandalous case of strep throat and a pretty significant hamstring injury. Seriously, even Hillis himself blames the game.
Johnson, however, isn't too concerned, telling fans that he isn't worrying about it.
"All things come to an end," he said during a fan chat.
Here's hoping that doesn't include his season, prematurely.
