Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Valve)

On Friday, Valve Software announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a downloadable shooter for XBLA, PSN and Steam due out early next year.

"For the past 12 years, [Counter-Strike] has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headlining competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise," said Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing at Valve. "CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

The new game will include classic, well-worn Counter-Strike maps (including de_dust, of course), but will be adding an unspecified assortment of new weapons, modes and online features, says Valve.

First appearing in 1999 as a fan-made mod for acclaimed first-person shooter Half-Life, the original Counter-Strike was an online game phenomenon. Its simple premise -- two teams stalk each another on a small map while attempting to accomplish a basic mission goal -- has influenced the multiplayer design of countless other shooters, and while its overall popularity isn't what it used to be, it's remained a staple on the competitive gaming circuit.

It hasn't always been received so warmly, however. The last Counter-Strike game to appear on consoles, 2004's Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, was something of a flop and never enjoyed the success of its PC counterpart. Here's hoping the new game recaptures the magic of the original.
