‘Doom’ creator making a new shooter

John Romero, one of the chief architects of the seminal first-person shooter Doom, is returning to the genre that made him a celebrity.

It's been a dozen years since Romero has made a shooter, but in an interview with Eurogamer, he confirmed plans to return to making action games, though he's not ready to divulge a lot of details yet.

"Yes, I'm definitely going to be making another shooter and it will be on PC first," he said. "I don't want to talk about the details but I already know what it is. I've already kind of designed the thing and it's pretty cool -- though of course, I am going to say that. I think it's a neat design, I haven't seen the design anywhere else."

About the only hint Romero gave was the game would be "MMO-ish" and that the character would grow and get better over time.

Romero was one of the co-founders of id Software, working alongside John Carmack, Tom Hall and artist Adrian Carmack to introduce shooters to the world. Together, the team created classics like Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake.

He was forced out of the company after Quake released and went on to form Ion Storm. Since 2001, he has largely focused on the mobile market. These days, he's part of Loot Drop Games with Hall and developer Brenda Brathwaite, who is also his fiancé.

Romero's last shooter was the ill-fated Daikatana. Though ambitious in scope, the game's release was undermined by a tasteless marketing plan and numerous delays. With a Duke Nukem Forever sort of hype but less-than-impressive gameplay, Daikatana incurred a massive backlash, eventually appearing on several "top 10 worst games" lists when it was released in 2000.

Romero notes to Eurogamer that partly because of that experience, he doesn't plan to discuss the new shooter in much detail until it's a lot further along.

"I've learned my lesson about talking too soon about specific game features and release dates," he said.
