EA distances itself from the Wii U

When EA recently announced it would not be making a version of this year's Madden franchise for the Wii U, it quickly declared its relationship with Nintendo was still a strong one.

That may turn out to be an overstatement, though.

Johan Andersson, technical director for EA’s DICE studio, noted in a Q&A with fans over Twitter that the company's Frostbite 3 engine does not run on the Wii U. EA has previously remarked that engine will be the centerpiece of its next-generation efforts.

"We did some tests with not too promising results with FB2 & chose not to go down that path," said Andersson.

That means that the likes Battlefield 4 -- and DICE's upcoming Star Wars game -- will skip the platform. Other EA titles that use the engine will likely forego it as well, and that could be over a dozen upcoming games.

"Frostbite 3 is a true next-generation tech base that will power a lot of experiences that EA will offer in the future," Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, told Yahoo! Games earlier this year.

The notable exception? EA Sports games (aside from Madden), as they do not use Frostbite. There's going to be something of a shakeup with those games, though, the publisher announced in its earnings call Tuesday.

EA once again announced plans to release an NBA game this year. This follows last year's aborted effort at a new NBA Live (which itself followed the company benching the franchise in 2011).

"We're very focused on getting into the NBA business in a significant way this year," said Gibeau during the call.

Fans waiting for a new Tiger Woods game, though, should settle in. EA said the next installment of PGA Tour will not be coming out until at least March 2014. People who have been wondering what the company would do with the UFC license it bought from THQ last year are going to have to wait until 2014 as well, as EA has no plans to release a UFC game this year. FIFA's not going anywhere, though, as EA has locked up exclusive rights with the league through 2022.
