If you’re wondering what the next-generation of gaming might look like, you’ll want to check out Battlefield 4.

EA took the wraps off the next iteration of its military shooter franchise Tuesday night at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, demonstrating an action-packed, cinematic game boasting some of the industry's most advanced graphics. Players will get their hands on it this fall.

EA was careful not to note which systems the game will ship on, but Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, said the game (which showed live gameplay to GDC attendees) was indicative of what the company expected for next generation titles.

One system that won't be seeing the game, however, is Nintendo's Wii U. Developers decided to bypass it to avoid stretching themselves thin -- and, perhaps, because of the system's generally disappointing sales.

"We’re not holding anything back with this game," added Patrick Soderlund, executive vice president of the EA Games Label. "Next gen is not about polygons and shaders, it’s about the emotional connection players will have with these characters. Battlefield 4 is about gripping experiences that are human and dramatic and believable. In this demo, you feel the stress of the moment, you feel like you’re in imminent danger, you feel for these characters."

EA says the single-player campaign is meant to establish more of an emotional bond with players than shooters like Battlefield have done in the past. The game also incorporates social aspects, tracking players' progress with the aim of boosting competition in the campaign.

Players will take on the role of a new character, Recker. After a series of calamitous and nearly catastrophic battles, he finds himself and his squad mates trapped in a rapidly sinking car. Shooting the window is the only way out, but to do so requires you to sacrifice an important team member.
