The folks behind smash iOS game Fruit Ninja released Jetpack Joyride on Thursday -- and it's already getting rave reviews.

The latest in a long line of 'Run for your Life' games (others include Canabalt and Halfbrick's own Monster Dash), Jetpack Joyride's premise is laughably simple: as you hightail it through an endless research facility, you press the screen to use your machine-gun jetpack. The goal? Collect coins, avoid obstacles, and get as far as you can.

There's a bit more to it than that -- vehicles, upgrades and mini-missions add depth -- but to MTV's Multiplayer, it's just about perfect.

"Jetpack Joyride is, without a doubt, one of the finest-crafted iOS games ever made," gushes Russ Frushtick. "It's horribly addictive, rewarding and, most importantly, it's a ton of fun to play."

Ars Technica's Ben Kuchera agrees.

"The game has a gleefully chaotic feel, and the act of avoiding obstacles and seeing how long you can survive almost forces you to give it one more go after you die," he writes.

It isn't too often the games media goes collectively gaga over a new iOS release -- breakout iPad hit Sword & Sworcery was one of the more recent examples -- but when they do, it usually signals a hit in the making. And considering this particular joyride only costs a buck, it's definitely one to check out.
