Journey (Sony)

Journey, the soothing, meditative downloadable title that has critics swooning, is proving just as popular with players.

Sony announced Thursday the game has become the fastest-selling title in the history of the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Store.

That feat includes both first- and third-party games. And while Sony and developer thatgamecompany declined to provide specific sales figures, it's still a tremendous achievement for a game that defies most traditional definitions of what a video game is.

Fans will soon get a chance to show Journey some additional love, as well, as thatgamecompany creative director Jenova Chen also announced plans to release a soundtrack to the game. Starting April 10, the Journey soundtrack will be available in the PlayStation Store, with a "limited" release on CD coming soon afterward.

"After we released Flower in 2009, players sent hundreds of emails about their experience with the game," wrote Chen. "They varied from a nine-year-old girl to a 65-year-old man, from a marine serving duty overseas, to a soldier returning from Iraq. … The reaction to Journey has been even more overwhelming. We have received more letters from fans in the two weeks since Journey's launch than we did for Flower over the past three years!"

Journey's minimalist mission is simple: Walk through a massive desert towards a shining light atop a mountain in the distance. Along the way, you might come into contact with other players, but no talking is allowed, meaning you'll have to find new ways to communicate with them. About the only complaint anyone has about the game is its short length, but they usually mute that as they rave about its replayability.

The triumph of Journey's sales came with some sad news for thatgamecompany, however, as president and cofounder Kellee Santiago, who has steered the developer through its projects, announced her departure earlier Thursday. Other key staffers are said to have submitted their resignations as well. Guess all journeys have to end sooner or later.
