Kirby might not be as famous as some of Nintendo's other mascots, but the pink gumball's got fans. Lots of 'em.

And they made their presence felt at this past weekend's PAX video game convention in Seattle.

To celebrate the spherical icon's 20th anniversary, 536 Kirby geeks gathered together to simultaneously blow chewing gum bubbles, setting a new Guinness World Record in the process.

"Kirby is no ordinary character, so it's not a surprise that his fans would go to extraordinary lengths to mark his 20th anniversary," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

Believe it or not, there are rules to blowing Word Record bubbles. Participants were instructed to chew their gum for a minimum of one minute before blowing a bubble, which they had to hold for 30 seconds. No word on what kind of gum they were using, but smart  money says Bubblicious (because there are spider eggs in Bubble Yum, right?).

The Nintendo effort trounced the previous record of 304 set by Kirkwood Community College students in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Oct. 27, 2010. Kirby's next effort, Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition, hits the Wii on September 16th and includes six of his earlier games.
