Best known to geeks as Magneto from the acclaimed "X-Men: First Class," Michael Fassbender has become something of a Hollywood heavyweight.  His next trick, however, will put him squarely on the video game map.

Variety reports that Fassbender is signed on to co-produce and play the starring role in an upcoming film based on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise. The movie will be made through his own small studio, DMC Film.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise's iconic hooded hero," Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, told Variety. "Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

Ubisoft has expressed great interest in transitioning their bigger properties to the silver screen. Last year, the company launched its own film division in an effort to exert more creative control over the fate of movies based on games like Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell. The Assassin's Creed film project was previously thought to be tied to Sony Pictures, butthat's now apparently on hold.

The film will likely loosely follow the plot of the video game franchise, though it's unclear if it will cover the exploits of the assassin from the first title, its more successful sequels, or even the soon-to-be-released Assassin's Creed 3.

Whatever the case, Ubisoft is hopeful that working with a smaller company -- and keeping the franchise closer to its vest -- will work out better than their last game-film project, "Prince of Persia." Despite Ubi teaming with Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie earned under $100 million in the U.S. and was deemed a commercial disappointment.

Fassbender, who most recently played the android David in "Prometheus," last dabbled in games by lending his voice to 2010's Xbox 360 hit, Fable III.
