Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)

Having already toppled day-one entertainment sales records, Activision announced Thursday that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has smashed another entertainment launch sales record by bringing in $775 million in its first five days of worldwide availability. That tops the two previous record holders, Call of Duty: Black Ops ($650 million) and 2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($550 million).

To say the least, Activision is pretty stoked.

"With $775 million of sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in its first five days, Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment," beamed Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard.

Kotick also mentions that the Call of Duty franchise as a whole has now generated a booming $6 billion in worldwide sales, making it one of the most valuable entertainment properties in town.

Modern Warfare 3 has been a particularly big deal on the Xbox 360. Over 3.3 million players concurrently shot at each other on the game's November 8 launch date -- a new record for Xbox Live -- while logging over 7 million multiplayer hours, a 20% increase over the launch day totals for Black Ops. Even crazier? Three of the top five games on Xbox Live during Modern Warfare 3's launch week were Call of Duty titles.

The $775 million mark pus Modern Warfare 3 right on track to meet -- and perhaps even beat -- analyst predictions that the title will pass the $1 billion mark by the end of the calendar year.
