Netflix on 3DS - Nintendo

As backlash rages over Netflix's reworked pricing structure, Nintendo 3DS owners in the U.S. and Canada got a bit of good news today as they'll now be able to stream TV shows and movies directly to their 3D handheld.

Nintendo announced the feature, which is accessible by downloading a free app from the portable system's eShop, in the hopes that it will entice more consumers to get in on the 3DS.

"The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience," boasted Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country."

Netflix streaming is already available on consoles like the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360, but the move to the portable game space is a significant step for Nintendo. Sony's competing PSP system doesn't include the movie service, while Apple's iOS devices have long enjoyed Netflix functionality.

Standard 2D titles will be streamed on the 3DS's upper screen. Nintendo added that access to 3D movies and shows using the system's glasses-free tech will become available "soon," although it's a curious statement considering that Netflix has yet to officially add 3D movies to its library.

And for wary parents, Nintendo also points out that the system comes with parental control features to help them limit the kinds of content kids can access.
