No season, no problem: EA simulates the NHL

It's tough being a hockey fan these days. With the lockout now in its 27th day and no substantial negotiations to resolve the situation, fans of the ice are starting to get worried that there may be no season at all this year.

EA, though, is offering a small measure of relief to fans looking to scratch the itch.

In the absence of real games, the publisher is simulating the season via NHL 13 on a week-by-week basis. And while the first week was a short one, it wasn't without a few notable virtual moments.As EA sees it, the St. Louis Blues, New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens would have all started off undefeated this year, boasting a 2-0-0 record. And New York Islanders star forward John Tavares would already be riding the bench until early December, after receiving a broken rib in an early game.

Ottawa's Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza were the standout players in the simulation, with Michalek scoring three goals and having two assists. Spezza had one goal and four assists.

Things didn't go so well for the Philadelphia Flyers, who lost both of their opening games and boast the virtual league's worst record.

Sure, a simulated season isn't anywhere near as satisfying as the real thing, but fans can take some solace in the fact that EA's accuracy on sports predictions is actually not too shabby. (And if you're a Flyers fan, don't worry — the company gets a lot of things wrong, too.)

The company plans to list the results and highlights (with the help of its partners at ESPN) every week on YouTube. Yep, a virtual recap for a virtual season. Here's how the pair recapped week one:
