The Easter Bunny apparently stuffed a few baskets with video games this year. The late holiday and a strong slate of titles overcame gloomy headlines of data theft to boost April video game sales by 26 percent, according to the NPD Group.

Hardware sales were also impressive, climbing 12 percent overall, though Microsoft and Sony had a lot more to celebrate than Nintendo did.

The Xbox 360 sold 297,000 units last month, a 60 percent increase over last April and beating out both the Wii and PS3. Despite the cyber attacks that resulted in the theft of personal information from over 100 million accounts, Sony saw its hardware sales jump 13 percent.

While Nintendo didn't issue a statement and NPD did not break out sales of the company's products to the media, people familiar with the data said their new 3DS saw a month-over-month sales decline of roughly 50 percent. In March, Nintendo sold 400,000 3DS units.

On the software front, the reboot of Mortal Kombat topped the sales charts, with critical darling Portal 2 taking second. Other winners included Lego Star Wars III and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12.

Pokemon, which ruled two spots on the charts last month, only took one this month - and just barely, at that. Pokemon White Version was the month's ninth best-selling title.

Missing completely from the Top 10 was SOCOM 4, the latest in Sony's multiplayer shooter franchise. Released just one day before the PlayStation Network was taken offline, the title seems a lock-in for this year's "worst timing" award.

Peripheral sales, which include Kinect and PlayStation Move, saw some gains as well, jumping 20 percent. And while Microsoft didn't release updated sales numbers for Kinect, it did note that Kinect Sports has topped the 3 million sales mark, while must-have launch title Dance Central has sold more than 2.5 million units worldwide.

The company also said it plans to triple the size of the Kinect portfolio of games by the end of the year.
