“Poignant” Gears of War 3 in stores now

Plugged In

Hauling out adjectives like "poignant," "frantic," "fantastic," and "touching," the gaming press has been busily lavishing praise upon Gears of War 3 for the past week. Running a stellar 91% average at Metacritic, it's already one of the year's most acclaimed releases, and you can find it on store shelves right now. (Assuming, of course, they haven't already been cleared out by eager gamers.) Step this way for all the deets in our must-read roundup piece, but here's the short version: if you have an Xbox 360, you need this.

Also new this week:

F1 2011 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Formula 1 racing has never really caught on in the United States, but for many overseas gamers, this release is almost as big a deal as Gears of War 3. Based heavily on last year's hit racer, F1 2011 kicks it up a notch with updated rules, improved AI, one new circuit (Buddh International, in India), and a heavier emphasis on multiplayer, including split-screen play.

Kirby Mass Attack (DS)

What's better than Kirby? A whole mass of Kirbies, that's what. Nintendo's pinkest and roundest hero has suffered an unfortunate mishap in this DS release; he's been split into ten Kirbies by an evil magician. Playing not unlike PSP classic LocoRoco, Mass Attack is putting smiles on the critics' faces to the tune of an impressive 85% on Metacritic. It might not be Gears of War, but it's a damn sight cuter.

Resident Evil 4 HD (Xbox 360, PS3)

Remastered, rescaled, and packed with a bewildering slew of extras, think of this as the Director's Cut, Criterion Collection, and super-extended edition of Resident Evil 4, the 2005 smash that breathed new life into Capcom's survival-horror franchise. Dropping today on PSN and Xbox Live at just $20, this is easily the bargain of the week.

Burnout Crash! (Xbox 360, PS3)

Got road rage? This downloadable game based on the famed Burnout racing franchise will let you live out your fantasies of wrecking fellow drivers by rewarding you for creating the biggest traffic pile-ups possible. Critics are mostly digging the carnage, but warn that this isn't the fast, frantic Burnout you might be used to.
