Some of Sony’s most charismatic mascots are ready for their close-up.

Ratchet & Clank, the long-running PlayStation action-adventure series, is headed to the big screen, reports Variety. Rainmaker Entertainment (“Escape from Planet Earth”) and Blockade Entertainment are partnering on the 3D animated film, which is due out in 2015.

Unlike other headscratching video game flicks (Asteroids? Really?), Ratchet & Clank seems the perfect fit for an animated adaptation. The series, which began in 2002 and has sold over 26 million copies worldwide, is known for its likable characters, terrific voice work and top-notch animations.

Blockade CEO and producer Brad Foxhoven seems well aware of the brand’s cred.

“Ratchet and Clank is a world-renowned video game franchise that appeals to a broad audience,” Foxhoven told Variety. “By working closely with SCEA and Insomniac, we will remain true to the game’s expansive mythology while also creating a story that will capture the imagination of those who will be new to this incredible world.”

To help ensure that actually happens, the film will feature the voice talents of James A. Taylor, David Kaye and Jim Ward, who voice the video game versions of Ratchet, Clank and the ridiculous Commander Qwark. Its script comes from TJ Fixman, senior writer for the game’s developer, Insomniac Games, and it’s being helmed by Jericca Cleland, a cinematographer whose past credits include animated films like Space Chimps and Arthur Christmas.

“We’ve always thought Ratchet & Clank would be a fantastic all-ages movie and are thrilled our intergalactic heroes will finally get their chance to shine on the big screen,” Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games, told Variety. “Insomniac is especially honored to play a hands-on role with the film’s production, including the screenplay, consulting on character development and animation, and adding support to the film’s marketing.”
