PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (Sony)
On Friday, Sony announced PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, a side-view, four-player melee fighter that borrows its concept quite unabashedly from Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. franchise. Not a bad idea, considering that series has sold over 10 million units, and Sony can proudly roll out its stable of characters from 20-years of development in the space.
"Fans have told us they wanted this game for a long time," said senior producer, Ivan Glaze.
The basic gameplay is the same button-mashing mayhem that allows more casual gamers to jump into Smash Bros. without too much confusion, but relies on skilled timing and the right fighting move choices to really dominate. Moves are accomplished by flicking the analog stick in one of four directions and hitting square, circle, or triangle. You'll perform everything from standard punches and kicks to lobbing heavy objects or dropping defensive items.
Sony has thus far only revealed six characters -- Kratos, Parappa, Sweet Tooth, Fat Princess, Colonel Radec, and Sly Cooper -- but expect to see loads more in the coming months.
