Civilization V

Platforms: PC

Fans of gaming's shockingly addictive Civilization series have had a long wait. It's been almost five years since the release of the series' last full installment, and expectations are running high for its fifth game, which releases this week.

Critics have already had their crack at it, of course, and the Civilization V verdict is trickling in: it's the best in the series so far, at least according to The Escapist's Greg Tito.

"My favorite Civilization to date," he writes. "Hex tiles and no stacking makes combat fun and more tactical...Civ V is an excellent game." Up for particular praise is the game's unobtrusive yet informative interface, its "welcome" addition of non-competing city-states, its "awesome" combat revamp -- and, of course, its Giant Death Robot. You just can't go wrong with a Giant Death Robot.

C&VG's Andrew Wooden agrees, calling Civ V "the cleanest, best looking, smoothest playing, most tactically enjoyable version of the deepest and most addictive strategy game of all time." He gives it particular props for being unafraid to strike out in a bold new direction -- rather than being a simple graphical refresh of the last game, "it goes its own way enough to offer something that seems genuinely fresh."

Over at IGN, writer Anthony Gallegos is, if anything, a touch lukewarm: ranking it 9/10, he's at the low end of the spread. Though he calls it "one of the best turn-based strategy games I've ever had the pleasure of playing," he takes issue chiefly with its simplified religion and government models, and its "far too aggressive" computer opponents. All the same, he's happy to recommend it to gamers of all skill levels, dubbing it "the first Civilization for PC that I feel is worth just about every person's time."

Good enough for you? Civ V is currently averaging a 96% on Metacritic, and although it's still too soon to call, it's looking nigh certain to be one of the year's best-reviewed games. What are you waiting for?

New Carnival Games

The original Carnival Games might have looked like just another Wii mini-game collection, but it turned out to be one of the system's best sellers. And that means one thing: sequel! New Carnival Games is exactly that, boasting 30 popular midway games as well as Motion Plus support. A good choice for kids, though grown-up gamers might find it goes down like a candied apple -- a bit too sweet to stomach.
