Gamers might complain about sequelitis, but with titles like Portal 2, Mortal Kombat 9 and Madden NFL 12 topping sales charts this year — and with blockbusters like Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 destined to do the same — gamers still fork over loads of dough to play them.
Will the same hold true of social games? Zynga certainly hopes so.
The company behind social game heavyweights like Farmville and CityVille has revealed their first official sequel via a debut trailer for Mafia Wars 2:
Very little is known about the new game. Zynga's confirmed that it will boast 3D graphics — a huge technical upgrade over the rest of the company's uber-popular 2D clickfests — but has yet to detail how exactly the game will play. More clicking? Or will this mob tale borrow a bit from Grand Theft Auto and actually include some action?
Either way, it's bound to be a very big deal. Originally launched back in 2009, Mafia Wars was one of Facebook's first big hits, enjoying over 40 million users at its height of popularity. That number has since shrunk dramatically, but it's still a potent Facebook brand.
Zynga has yet to announce a release date (it's just "coming soon"), though Mafia Wars 2 might find it a bit harder to take over the neighborhood this time around. Competition lurks around every corner, perhaps none more threatening than an upcoming social game based on the original Don himself, The Godfather.
